Convert Tube Lengths from inches to Feet

All,

I am having a dickens of a time trying to get something to work with Inventor Tube and Pipe.  All I want to do is get the tube lengths for the flexible hose to report in units of feet on the BOM.

So far, I have tried to edit the family table in the Content Center Editor, but setting the PL or L units to ft didn't do anything.  Next I created my own column in the Editor, set the value to {PL}, set the units to feet and pushed this to a custom iProperty.  This worked initially, but any time that I change the size of the hose, the custom iProperty does NOT update.  I've placed a link to a screencast showing my approach.

I feel like this should be an easy change to make, but perhaps I have overlooked something or made this more complicated than need be.  Anyway, I would appreciate any input.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.  Hope all is well and have a most blessed day!

Peace,

Pete

Have you modify the BOM information under Tools/document settings for your CC family template:

Mark,

I have not updated the family because I don't have access to it.  What I am trying to do is to modify one of the content center families that Inventor alread provides.  If I have to create my own, I suppose I could, but would prefer not to have to do that.  Is this what you have in mind or were you thinking of the piping runs.iam file?  Just want to make sure I understand what you mean.  Thanks for the tip and have a most blessed day!

Peace,

Pete

This post from a few years ago was about changing the units in Frame Generator.  Not exactly what you're doing, but I wonder if the technique can be adapted to make the change you want to make?  Goive it a look, and let me know if it helps.

Chris,

Wow, that is cool!  I'm glad you showed me this and will note it for other things, but unfortunately that blog post didn't seem to do it.  What I am trying to do is to get the units for flexible tube to display in feet in the BOM, not in inches.  I followed the steps in your blog post and saved down a custom copy of the part, right clicked on the PL parameter and set the units to "ft" instead of "in", saved the file and then replaced the family template in the CC Editor.  However, when I placed a new version of the tube into my assembly, it still shows inches for the BOM units...

It almost feels like the units of inches are hard coded into the flexible tube.  I'll take another look at it later on to see if I missed something.  Thanks for the tip and have a most blessed day!

Peace,

Pete

If it's BOM (Assembly) then you need to edit the family template.

If it's the Parts List (drawing) then you don't need to change anything, but configure the units in the Parts List.

Here's how: http://blog.ads-sol.com/2015/10/reported-length.html

Be careful that rounding with 0 digits precision will round the value lower or higher different than the actual length.

All,

I truly thank you for your time in taking a peek at this for me.  Just with your posts alone, I feel like I have gained some essential insights into editing the Content Center.  Unfortunately, I can't seem to be able to apply what you've written to get the results that I desire.  Instead of trying to type it all out, I have made a screencast that walks one through the approach that I have taken.  Be warned that it is about 12 minutes long, but I tried to be concise on the 3-4 things that I have tried.  If you could please view the video and let me know if I have done something incorrectly, I would really appreciate it!  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.  Hope all is well and have a most blessed day!

Take a look at the screen cast. You will need to create your own editable Family Table.

Also seach the ScreenCast for videos from my class at AU last week. Search for "AU2015 IM100025". It will show how to create/copy an existing table, edit it to make it your own.

Note, you can't edit a Table unless it resides in a Read/Write library. You must create a new CC Library, copy an existing Library in and the edit it. It must also reside within your Project File path as well.

blair,

I believe I have created the custom cc library correctly, as I was able to do exactly what you show in your video.  Unfortunately, it didn't seem to give me the result that I wanted, which was to display the length in feet.  Not sure if you viewed the video that I posted or not, but what you are proposing is the first thing that I attempted.  There is definitely the possiblility that I performed a step incorrectly, so if you could view the video and let me know if you notice a mistake, I would appreciate it.  I'll double check my library and copied family just to make sure I didn't overlook something, so thanks for the tip!  Hope all is well and have a most blessed day!

You changed the Units for the PL and Run lengths as well?

I've never run the T & P module in feet before but the Family Table is where all the units and size are taken from. Odd, something I'll take a look at this evening when I get home. Still catching up on work from being gone all last week.

Try creating a new Style after the Family Table has been changed. Possibly the data from the Table might be written in when the Style is created.

blair,

I appreciate the tips and sorry for the delay in getting back to you.  I dove into the CC Editor and took a look at my family table.  The only values that I saw were for the "PL" and "L" parameters and I set those both to feet units.  I couldn't find anything called "Running Lengths", so please let me know if I overlooked something.  Then I went to test it out and couldn't find my old style, so ended up recreating that too (would have liked to test one before the other, but oh well...), but those didn't work out.  Still reported the length with inches in the BOM.  Not sure what else to try from here and one of my colleagues was able to build an external iLogic rule, so I'll probably roll with that for now.  However, if anyone has any other thoughts, please do not hesitate to respond!  Hope all is well and have a most blessed day!

After you have edited the Family Table, you need to create a new Style. The data from the Family Table is read in at the time the Style is created. I don't know if the Refresh CC will only update the fittings or pull in from the Family Table.

If you export the Style and open with something like Microsoft's XML NotePad, you can see the information for the ID and OD in the Style.

blair,

After I edited the family table the last time, I believe I did create a new style, but want to confirm.  Essentially, I opened up the "Tube and Pipe Styles" tool, copied the existing "Hydraulic Hose - No Fittings" style and edited that.  From there I renamed it and replaced the family with the updated one I had just edited.  That is the style that I set current and have a tried to use.  Is this the process that you had in mind when creating a new style?

Also, I am attaching the XML file.  I took a peek at it and didn't notice anything regarding the length.  Something that looks odd is that the diameter is reported as 1/2 (inches), but the field in the sizing is 1.27.  My assumption is that the value actually used is "cm" and then somewhere along the line Inventor converts that back to inches when reporting the size.  I have attached the file for your viewing, but am not sure what else to be looking for.  Have a most excellent and blessed day!

Pete

Don't copy and edit an existing Style, this still has the old Family Table sizes. You need to create a new Style and point it to the new edited Family Table.

blair,

Gotcha.  I created a completely new style and then selected the family table.  Unfortunately, that didn't seem to make any difference.  However, I will try to remember that trick moving forward.  Seems a little odd that one couldn't just copy an existing style and modify it to suit one's needs...

I forgot last time, but am now attaching the new style xml.  Please let me know if anything looks amiss.  Hope all is well and have a most blessed day!

Your Style is still in Imperial, you did change all the units values in the Family Table for Size and Length

blair,

Thanks for the video.  I debated about posting one and should have.  Yep, I changed the "L" and "PL" to be both be using units of "ft".  Please refer to the images below for snapshots of my CC family and new T&P style.  Would you like me to send you a copy of my CC library so that you can see if I manipulated the family table incorrectly?
