Content center parts

I have setup a CC library for testing purpose. Now that everything start to fall in place, I want to rename the library, copy the families/categories over...

On a first attempt, when opening an assembly with some test-library parts, they could not be found.

What is the correct way to move over some used library families/parts, to a new library, without losing the link with the old assemblies?

You can't..   That info is linked to that given family/library once a CC is placed into an assembly.   The structure of CC is rigid and once you start placing CC info into an assembly you basically lock yourself down.

even not with "copy to", save copy as"...?

No because you're creating a new instance... 

Copy to:  Copy the info to a new library and link it back to the original database in case the database information is updated.   Even though there's a link back to the original database its still a separate type of CC.

Save Copy as:  Copy the info to a new library and do not link it back. 

In addition are you going to use these families/content center in Inventor tube & pipe?  If so you are at the wrong level of T&P components..

That must be a mess time after time when people are upgrading to a newer versions of Inventor, no...?

What does upgrading in Inventor have to do with this?  Once you establish your structure, it goes along with the upgrade.  Once you start messing with the structure once its established that's where you run into situation.

It is also important to have a plan in place and determine what information is going to be added to your custom libraries.  Granted your required information will change over time, but starting out without a plan is not a good choice.  Here are some items to consider in your plan:

• Develop a unique naming convention (member file name) that will be used to ensure the member names are not being duplicated in the content center.
• If you are using the desktop version, make sure your custom libraries are backed up regularly.
• Build your structure wisely.  Though the content center editor interface may appear like Windows Explorer, it doesn’t function that way. 
• Parts that are often changed should not reside in Content Center
• Parts that are overly complicated and/or contain a lot of information should also be excluded from Content Center.
• Parts requiring iLogic coding should not be placed into Content Center in my opinion
• Standard assemblies or any type of assemblies are never allowed in Content Center.
• Parts that are alike but based on different specifications (i.e. ANSI, DIN, ISO, and etc) should be separated in different family tables.
• A family table can consist of a single entry.
• Defining family tables under certain categories like fastener, structural, and/or tube & piping may require additional information besides the data you are providing.
• Consider making more than one read/write library for your organization.

Hi,

just small note added to nice Mark's response. If you move CC family (Using CC Editor) from one r/w library to another r/w library then your assembly file with CC parts remains same/intact, means you can open such assembly and no CC part will be missing, you can apply Change Size on CC parts, when you edit CC family you can use Refresh Standard Component command to refresh CC parts... Basically Move family from r/w library to r/w library has no impact.

My bad..  I wasn't even thinking about the new Inventor functions in 2019.1..  However if I remember correctly @Anonymous is still on Inventor 2018.  @Anonymous is that correct?

just FYI: this MOVE functionality is not new function/feature, it is in Content Center more years. So must be available in R 2018 as well.
