Constrain between sketch and solid geometry

Hi all,

I am unable to constrain solid geometry (inserted parts in an assembly) with 3d sketch lines. No challenges in doing it with 2d sketches but with 3d sketches.. 😞

(long story short) we are evaluating moving from SW to Inventor. Tipically (for this post purpose) we would build a 3d sketch to be used as a skeleton (in lack of better word) to assemble pre-defined solid geometry along and onto it. The goal of this method of work is that it is easier to adjust and control the overall geometry of the pipelines we're building if we structured it through the use of a 3d sketch.

Am i missing something here?

I thank beforehand any and all assistance

🙂

Zip and attach your SolidWorks assembly here - someone will show you how to recreate in Inventor.

If the assembly is too large - upload it to your A360 Drive.

JD's suggestion was very good.. Quite a few people here and Solidworks users at one time or another.. I think JD teaches both Swx and INV..

You might not have been doing it the right way in Solidworks either or someone may have a much better method..

Also are you using the tube/pipe module?

Frankly I've NEVER used a 3d sketch in Inventor... never saw a need for one

I use Skeletal or Master modeling techniques including the use of 3D sketches all the time.

But about 90% of the work I see done in SolidWorks or Inventor was done incorrectly - so the software functionality was not the issue.

Communication education/training seems to be the issue.

Q. Exactly what problem are you experiencing (Hint: this question cannot be answered in words alone.)

Hi! I think I understand the issue here. Indeed, Inventor does not allow users to create assembly constraint/joint on a 3D sketch. Traditionally, 3D sketch is considered for geometry construction purpose, not used for constraining components. You will need to creat work feature on 3D sketch so you can constrain to the work feature instead. 2D sketch does allow it because it supports Adaptive solving (constraint drives geometry change).

Thanks!
