I am having difficulty creating a black to white gradient that will go from the tip of my part down to the base evenly. Is there an easy way to do this as when I try it either decides to only cover a very small section of my part or looks 'patchy.' Ive attached an image of the part.
You might be able to get a decal to to that.
Otherwise, in your appearance that you create, add an image in the generic section, but change the tile settings by clicking on the image. (set one of them to none)

(note, you only see the gradient when using "realistic" as the visual style.)
The geometry of your part might have some influence on how it gets applied, but you'll have to play with the scale/rotation in the gradient image (right side window in my screenshot) to get it where you need to.
I applied the appearance to the entire part, but you can also apply it to a single face if that's what you need.
Another way might be to apply a gradient image as a decal, but that's also dependent on the shape of your geometry.
If you can't get it to work, post your part (or a mockup of the shape you need the gradient applied to) and we'll see if we can find a way to get it to work.
I don't think I am allowed to post the part because of the nature of the project however the teaching assistants are currently unavailable so asking for advice in a forum seems reasonable. I attached a photo of what the part currently looks like when I apply a gradient and the settings I am using. It is a lofted feature between several work planes so I am not sure if that makes the solution any different as I have been trying to do this for some time now.
