Changing Positional representations in Inventor presentation

I'm trying to use a assembly with position representations for an presentation (.IPN).

But I cannot change te Positional representation here, see attachment.

Do I miss something or is this just not possible in Inventor presentation?

HI @anjewierden

Can you share what version and how you're doing it?

I just created a scene with a new position in 2018..

Hallo Micheal Davis,

Thanks for your reaction.

We use here Autodesk Inventor 2018.

What I do is: open an .IPN, Insert model, then right click on Scene and select representations.

Here I can change View Representations, but not the Positional.

I see on your screenshots that you select the representation direct when you insert the model.

That works on one storyboard, but does that also works when you want to use multiple representations in multiple storyboards?

Michael Davis,

I made a small light model for an screencast.

First I placed te model wit an representation like you did.

After that I make an new storyboard where I want to tweak the other position representation.

Hi! Many thanks for the video! Unfortunately, it is a limitation in Presentation environment. Positional Rep helps set up the initial position for a given assembly in a Presentation. After that, you can create Tweaks to move the components around. All components are free to move. As a result, it already violate the Positional Rep. If we allow you to select a different PosRep, some of the tweaks may not make sense and will have to fail. More than likely, you will want to start from scratch.

Thanks again!

Ok thanks.

That means that I have to make multiple presentation (.IPN) for the same assembly.

I really don't understand this reply.  Tweaks are dependent on a starting position based on an initial position defined by the positional rep.  Are you suggesting tweaks are just sitting willy-nilly in 3d space? Are they not based on their position relative to their positional representation? Seems to me that this would be what you want and any movement of the positional rep should update those part's positions. I assume that each part has a base position in the IPN (I know it does because you can remove tweaks and have those parts snap back into their base position). Any tweak is then based from that base position and therefore does not violate the positional rep since they are children of that pos rep, so to speak. So, yes, they are free to move, but their location is defined by that positional rep. Change the positional rep and the parts should update accordingly and predictably.  Sadly, we do not have that option after all these years.

Hi! I wish it could be updated easily. But the fact is that the PosRep only provide the initial position. It has been working like this for a long time unfortunately.

Many thanks!
