Change dwg view file reference

Anonymous
Not applicable
Our method for making revisions and keeping down-level databases for record
is to copy the original file rev 1(xxxxxx-01.ipt) to (xxxxxx-02.ipt) then
making the changes required.
Did this for the two parts in the assembly. and their dwgs (.idw) files.

Problem is the views in the drawing (.idw) still reference the original rev
1 file(s).
In the assy file one can relace the part so the file shows and references
the current rev files.
I can find no way to do this with the drawing (.idw) files. If a new drawing
has to be created this is really problematical as it no longer shows just
revisions but is an entirely new drawing (don't know how else to describe it
!).
This says nothing of the amount of work involved on anything but a simple
drawing.

Is there a way, and I'm afraid I already feel there isn't, to replace the
reference file in the drawing views?
I'm afeared I may have to rethink the method of trying to keep downlevel
databases.
This is not a good situation...

Any help please !?!?

Copy the IDW. Open DA from the copy. Copy the IPT or IAM to the new name.
Check out Design Assistant help and search the NG.

Or join the rest of the crowd and just make pdf files of each revision
of the drawing rather than wrestling with IV.

There are two ways to get what you want:

1. you use pack and go and take all files with you and save them somewhere
else
and rename 'em with the design assistant
or
2. take following steps:

a. copy the original file rev 1(xxxxxx-01.ipt) to (xxxxxx-02.ipt) then
b. copy the original file rev 1(xxxxxx-01.idw) to (xxxxxx-02.idw) then
c. change xxxxxx-01.ipt to xxxxxx-01-temp.ipt
d. open xxxxxx-02.idw (inventor will ask you for location of xxxxxx-01.ipt)
and you browse for xxxxxx-02.ipt
e. rename xxxxxx-01-temp.ipt back into xxxxxx-01.ipt
now open xxxxxx-01.idw and you will see xxxxxx-01.ipt
and if you open xxxxxx-02.idw you will see xxxxxx-02.ipt

if you try to open xxxxxx-01.idw between step d and e you will screw up
something
it's a little tricky, but if you follow step a-e you r fine.
You might wanna try that first with a simple test part 😉

create a model (block) and a idw
copy both somewhere else and then do steps a-e
after that you can change the block-01 and you will see that block-02 stays
