Change default Thread Size

Hello everyone,

I'm working on a project with a lot of ISO M22 threads. The nominal thread pitch for M22 threads is 2,5. But when I create a 22 mm hole and designate a thread with the thread tool to this hole the default pitch is 3 and I have to change the thread to the correct pitch manually.

Is there a way to change the behaviour of Inventor so that a 22 mm hole automatically gets a M22x2,5 thread?

I'm using Inventor 2025.

Thanks,

Eike

The only workaround I can think of is to:

1. Ensure No Inventor instance is running
2. Create a Backup file of your current thread.xlsx file (found in your Design Data\XLS\en-us (if english language)
For older versions of Inventor, it might be the thread.xls file (older version of Excel)
3. Delete the entries of the M22x3 in the ISO Metric Profile

4. Save the modified thread.xlsx

5. Open Inventor and confirm that it now defaults to the next size which is M22x2.5

You can use your backup to restore the deleted M22x3 later

Hi!

I would not mess with the thread file, unless i need to add a new non existent holes.

If I'm going to use a specific hole several times in the future, i would create a preset to make available that specific hole, anytime i need to use it.

Here's how to create a preset:

Thanks,

I tried this and it seems to work. At least for 22 mm holes I now get the correct thread pitch. I tried some other dimensions and so far they still get the correct threads.

And I can't imagine ever missing the 22x3 thread.

Maybe this could be a task for Autodesk changing the default setting of Inventor to the standard 2,5 pitch.

Thank you, I already tried the solution of jnowel. Like I wrote, at the moment it works flaweless. If I run into problems, I can switch back to the back up file and use your solution.

The thing is, every time you change PC, or install new version, etc... you have to change the file, which is more tricky than create a preset... but, both processes will work.

Good catch. According to my references books there is no such thread as M22x3.

Cheers,

Igor.

Inventor takes the default thread designation from the first matching entry in the thread table (thread.xlsx). In the ISO Metric profile shipped with Inventor, M22×3 appears before M22×2.5, so it becomes the default when you select size 22.

Editing the thread.xlsx (as already suggested) works, but the more robust approach is to maintain a custom Design Data folder with your company-standard thread tables and point Inventor to it. That way your preferred defaults (like M22×2.5) persist across updates, new installations or different machines.

So the behavior itself is driven by thread table order, and the stable fix is controlling the Design Data thread file rather than changing it locally per installation.
