CENTER POINTS DO THEY EXIST?

Not exactly sure how to ask or describe what i'm needing but here we go.

former creo user.  while in a model assembly creo had a function, option to turn on all points on round parts.  it would put a tiny point on the end of all round parts.  from those points you were able to offset points.  those points would then be used to create sweeps.  we would use them when making tubing runs that would have multiple bends and on different planes.  really handy when making lube systems.

Lets start here.

Below shows where to turn the various points, planes and axis on/off by simply checking/unchecking the box.

With that said, you can create as per below.

You can also create sketch points which are needed to create work points.

I think to your original question, Inventor does not create automatically the points you describe, but as I show you above, they can be easily created.

you pretty much did what a co-worker of mine did after i explained to him how we did stuff in creo,  inventor just takes more steps.  

all of my options were checked as per your reply.  i would still like to be able to put a point or show a point  on the face of a round part without having to go through  a lot of steps.  would like to be able in my assembly pick the "point" icon in the ribbon, select a circle and "bam!" see a point in the center and on the face.

Do you have Inventor Professional with Routed Systems?

I honestly have no idea what we have here.  all i know is inventor professional 2019.  what all is in it, what it does come with and without i have no idea.

If the point is actually going to be at the center of a face of a round rod, you can expand the work point options in the part file, and choose the "Center of loop" option. Then when you select the outside edge of the rod, it will place a work point at the center. This can also be accomplished by right clicking after selecting the work point command and just choose "loop select". This will place a work point at the center of any closed loop.

 

Hope that helps speed up your process.

I'm not sure what you mean by wanting to put a point at the center of a round part and on its face.

Putting a point on the center of a round part is an easy task, but from you're saying you want it to put a point at the center and also on the face of the round part. That's two points, now the bigger question, considering you're working in a 3D environment, where on the face are you wanting that point located? Do you want it projected out from the center? Where on the 3D face of the sphere do you want the point and how do you (or Inventor) determine where? Remember, since you're in 3D, your not selecting a "circle", you're selecting a spherical surface. Maybe you can post a pic or a video to clear things up?

ok!  that got me closer to my goal!  glad to know about that feature, thanks!

now for all of the marbles.....can you offset a point without having to offset a plane, then projecting on that plane and placing a point?

the point that's now visible i want to project, offset  a new point from it....

Yeah, not so automatic here.  You will have to create a new sketch on that face, place a sketch point, then exit and create a new work point using that sketched point.  This is one method, look at the work point options on how to create one.  Maybe there is a better one that works better for you.

You can offset a work plane at some distance, and if you have an axis that runs down the middle of your rod, create a work point that is the intersection of the axis and plane, no sketch required.

what i am trying to accomplish is making a transfer tube on a hydraulic cylinder.  one port lets say is at 90 deg. vert on one end of the cylinder and the other port is on the opposite end at 22 deg off vert.  i am wanting to project points off of each port at a distance.  then i need to sketch a line that goes through all of the points so i can have a path for my sweep to follow.  

sorry i'm having trouble explaining what i'm after.  looks like the only way i can get my end result is by offsetting planes, projecting on those planes and then sketching a ling for my sweep.  more steps than in creo but the end result looks to be the same.

once i add a point onto my part like you said, in my upper assembly where i have everything assembled to clear things up, without having all of the points from my parts showing up and adding clutter, can you turn them off in the assebly without having to do so on each individual part?

If you have a work point on in a part, it will be shown in all instances in the assy. If you open the part and turn off the visibility at the part level, it will be off in all instances of the assembly. By doing this, it allows you to independently turn the visibility of features on/off at the assembly for a single instances vs. having all on all the time.

Routed Systems

Other (easier) ways as well.
