Cannot resize text box in sketch

This may be an easy one to answer but we cannot figure out to resize the text box on a 2d sketch. I created a sketch on the surface of a part and added some text (Part#) by default it wraps the text and drops the last words underneath. The text box has a set of green handles around it I assume for resizing, but all of them just move the box around and non of them resize it. I've searched and searched and cant find an answer. This leads me to believe im the only one having this issue and it must be something simple I'am missing. I tried changing the selection filter as well.

Option 1 (best unless your text will be changing all the time..)

Right click on the text and select "text box" then drag the lower right hand corner of that to resize the wrappable area..

You actually have the "text box" turned off and its responding to where it is but the grips you see are not the text box..

Option 2

You can also pick the "single line text" button in the text dialog box.. to force it to always be single line..

Thank you @mcgyvr

I don't seem to have that option when right clicking on the text "text box" is greyed out. I'm currently running the latest build of inventor by the way (171, 2018.1).

Attach a *.ipt file here that exhibits this behavior.

In addition to dragging a the right side corners to resize - you can also dimension the box to resize.

@rgollob Then there is something specific missing from your problem description.. Please post the ipt file so we can figure that out..

"Text Box" should either have a check mark next to it or not (note this is with the text dialog box closed.. Thats when you right click and select "text box" to put a check next to it to change it from the green corner dots (grips) to the yellow dotted line (the actual text box)

Thanks @mcgyvr

There isn't anything missing from my problem description... my problem is just as I explained it. I would like to share the .ipt file, however my company will not allow it. When I have a moment I will replicate the issue in a dummy file and upload it.

Yeah I'm just not able to think of the reason that the "text box" would be grayed out in a RMB menu..

Thats whats missing here.. Something "special" is going on there..

Just so its clear..

With the sketch active and you aren't in the text dialog please right click on the text and you should see this..

Check "text box".. click that then you can enlarge the actual text box..

well I just tried to upload a file I created and it timed out and erased my post, but that post explained that i found it isolated to accessing the .ipt file from the .iam file as i was doing. this greys out the "text box" and rotate. however in the .iam file i created to share i can use the green dots to resize no problem but the "Text box" and rotate are greyed out.

I am kind of lost here now.

Is your sketch at the part level or is it at the assembly level?

In your part you can add an angle dimension to have text at virtually any angle you want.

...then why any mention of assembly?

Have you solved the issue?

If not - can you attach dummy assembly that illustrates the issue?

Hi rgollobm,

At any time (whether editing in context of an assembly or straight from a part) you can choose Edit Text from the right click options, and then turn on the Text Box by using the button (highlighted in the image below) in the Format Text dialog box to turn it on.

Why the text box option is greyed out when editing in context of an assembly is a mystery to me, but there might be a good reason for it.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,

Because an ipt file can be accessed and modified from within an iam file which is how I was accessing the file to add text... very common practice in my experience.

Yes, it is.

Now that I have some example files - I will attempt to reproduce the behavior.

Edit:

I can reproduce the behavior (part of it anyhow, Text Box is grayed out and Orientation is grayed out, but I can still drag corners) when attempting to Edit the part within the assembly.  Looks like one for @johnsonshiue

Only if I Open the part file do I get full control.

yes and in my original assy file I cant even resize the text box using the handles as you demonstrated in the video. For whatever reason it works in that .iam file.

In my original file I also have to have the "text box" button toggled in the "format text" dialog box in order to have control over the rotation since the text is flipped and the "rotate" is also greyed out in the pop up menu when you right-click the text. if I could just get the green dots to adjust the text size as I can in the assy file I posted that would be good enough. Not sure why its misbehaving when accessing a part from within an .iam...

I appreciate all of you taking the time to try and help with this issue!

So to summarize..

When a part is edited in the context of an assembly you cannot toggle the text box of sketch text,etc...

When a part is edited by itself all works as it should....

Thats the missing information from the original post though.. (part was being edited in context of an assembly)

This works the same way in 2017 and 2018 but I'm not sure if its always been like that..

I didn't think there were any "limitations" to what you could do while editing parts in the context of an assembly.. Guess there is though.. Not sure why..
