Cannot import excel points/ data into Inventor

I can not transfer the points I have for a NACA 4412 aerofoil from excel to Inventor without an error stating 'The selected excel file does not meet the required formatting for the Import points... commands.' I have set up the data correctly starting at the A1 cell for the x coordinates and have done as said by numerous forums to change to a .xls file instead however this still doesnt seem to work. Any help would be appreciated.

You have to separate the columns.

Your x & y are in the same column.

They need to be separated.

Also you need a z coordinate if you're importing into a 3d sketch.

I put all zeros and it worked.

Otherwise, just separate the values into separate columns for a 2d sketch.

Also, you probably want to anchor them with a FIXED constraint. 

The way I separate the numbers is using TextPad like this:

1. Save the Excel file as a txt file

2. Open the txt file in TextPad

3. Use BLOCK SELECT mode

4. Click at the beginning of the 2nd column and drag down to the end

5. Cut that text

6. Go to the bottom of the 1st column and add a blank line

7. Paste the 2nd Column of numbers below that blank line

8. Search for and delete all spaces

9. Save and Close the txt file

10. Open that txt file in Excel

11. Select all numbers below the blank line and CUT

12. Click in 1st cell of 2nd Column and PASTE

13. Save and Close, and you're done.

The key to this is TextPad's BLOCK SELECT mode.

Thank you! That worked. I thought the x and y points were already in different columns so that was the issue.

Yeah, that 'faked me out' at first, b/c the second set of numbers looked like they were in Column B.

But when I auto-resized the columns the reality of it wasn't how it appeared.   😯

It's kind'a like politics...nothing is as it appears!
