cannot edit shared folder models

our workgroup sharesa 3d folder and we are unable to edit or change each others models and drawings using inventor. any suggestions? a possible file option checked? please help

This shared folder, is it set has Libary status in the active project?

Hmm, thats a good question. im a beginning user so im still learning. Now when i attempt to save a new model into a folder, i get a prompt saying "the location of the selcted file is not in the active project", i dont remember this prompt coming up before.

You do NOT need to create another post as you already have one for this same problem. Creating another post won't help.

You NEED to provide information when requested. So far you haven't provided enough information to properly diagnose your problem.

You have file permissions issues.. 

You need to solve those permissions issues..

We cannot help you if you can't provide proper information..

How are you achieving a "vault" (as stated in your other post) ? Is that software you have purchased to create this functionality? If so what is the company and name of that software?

Or is it just a regular network location that you just save your files in?

Do you have an IT department that is familar with user permissions?

Can they join this discussion so they can clearly state the problem?

If you right click on any of the files through windows explorer you can go to the "security" tab and view the groups and users and their permissions to the files.

That is step #1 in diagnosing the issue. 

More than likely your users need to be in a group that has permissions to modify and write to that file.

You should start by reading this..

Do each of your users use the same project file? Or does each have its own?

I really think this is a Windows permissions issue and not Inventor but we can solve this fairly easily if

#1-Post a picture of your project file settings.. Go to File..Manage..Projects and take a screenshot (windows snipping tool) of those settings.. (Note: Expand any of the + so that we see everything inside those sections.. you may need to drag the window to resize everything to fit in one image.. if not post 2 images)

#2-Then tell us the filepath to the network "vault/3d folder" where you store all your CAD files..

The filepath of your "vault" location should be indicated in the "Location" section of the project file..

McG, its a company shared folder in our network location and not purchased software. Ive also been attempting to contact our IT department as well to resolve this, and im still awaiting there response. And again , im a beginning user trying to become more familiar with inventor. Im personally unsure whether its an IT setting or an inventor setting. Thats why in trying to persue any and all avenues because its holding up our work flow. my first reaction was an IT issue but im open to all suggestions.

Mr McGyvr, I beleive this could be the right path to start looking, because when i go to save a new model or project, i get a prompt telling me the file location is not in the active project. And i havent seen this prior to recently

This tells me your project file is setup incorrectly... BUT that is NOT the cause of the permissions issues either..

Sounds like you have 2 issues.

#1-Incorrectly setup project files (please read that link above and watch some youtube videos,etc..) project files are very important in Inventor so its important you understand exactly how they work)

#2-Incorrect network permissions... You need to have all your CAD users in a group that gives them permissions to access (modify/write,etc..) other users files.. This is 100% an IT issue that they can easily fix.. This has nothing to do with Inventor..

IT can setup a "CAD_Users" group or whatever and put all of your Inventor users into it.. 

The basics are that when a user is saving a file to the network location the file permissions gets set so that only THEY have permissions to modify the file.. IT needs to add a group so that even if the file is saved by a users that the "group" can still access that fully.. Simple task for IT..
