Cannot edit part in assembly

HI all for some reason I am not able to edit a part in assembly. I took a L angle from the library and saved it to my job file with a different name. I set it up as a iPart table. Now I want to change the part from the table. The only way I know to do that is edit. Edit is grayed out. I do not have the part open. Using 2021

@sschulteH6WZ3

You cannot edit an iPart from within an assembly.  It has to be edited in the iPart factory file.  Then regenerate all of the iPart members and it will funnel down to your assembly.

If I open the part and edit say the length then all the parts in the assembly will go to the new length. That kind of defeats the purpose.

if you're intending to just change the length of an iPart, and that length already exists in the table, then simply right-click on "Table" as shown in your screenshot and edit it that way.

You need to add the length parameter into the iPart factory table.  Then you can control the various lengths.

If the length is not in there, then you are right.  It defeats the purpose.

Well this is odd I did have the length set along with the legs and thickness. Now when I open the part the table is all messed up. I think I will delete it and bring in a new L angle from the library.

Hi! I believe you are trying to perform SWX Configuration workflow on Inventor. Inventor iPart/iAssembly was designed to generate library components (clearly defined and driven by a table; rarely changed). Things like nuts and bolts and actuators. The ability to edit a variation on the fly and store all variations within a file is work in progress. If you are interested, please feel free to sign up Inventor Feedback Community (https://autode.sk/InventorBeta) to take a look at the Model States workflows.

Many thanks!
