Can't Open a New Drawing File

I am trying to run Autodesk Inventor Professional 2010.

My brand new system from Dell is as follows:

Studio XPS 16 Notebook
Intel CoreTM i7-820QM (1.73 - 3.06 GHz 8M/8 threads)
8GB, DDR3, 1333MHz 2 Dimm
15.6 inch Wide Screen 16:9 1080p Full HD WLED LCD, W/2.0 MP, XPS 1645
ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4670 1GB
500GB 7200RPM Free Fall SensorSeagate Hard Drive
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
Integrated 10/100 Network Card

I also have Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 loaded.

When I try to open a new blank drawing file, my computer completely locks up. Is there some incompatibility between Inventor 2010 and my configurations?

Please help!

Must have Inventor 2010 SP1 and hotfixes installed. Also approved ATI
Graphics driver for D3D.

Hi Dennis,

Thank you so much for help me out on the phone tonight. You told me I should email you so you can share the information on the fix that should help with the incompatability issues between Windows 7, Inventor 2010, and Excel.

Thanks again!!

FYI - The fix for Allison's Dell Windows 7 computer was to set Tools >>
Application Options >> Hardware to "Direct 3D" from "Direct 3D 10". It
seems that the Win7/IV2010 SP1 combo does not like the D3D v10 driver
that Dell has supplied. She's now running fine.

Here's a reprint of Brad Town's post:

Apparently a particular registry entry, normally added during Office
2007's installation, is not added when Office 2007 is installed on
Windows 7. To work around this so you can edit iParts with Excel 2007 on
64-bit Windows 7, you can try the attached workaround script.

NOTE: The following has only received minimal testing by me on a handful
of machines. Only implement the workaround if you absolutely need a fix
*now*.

The first time you run the script, it will copy the 32-bit entry to the
64-bit location in your registry so 64-bit Inventor can find Excel. If
you run it again, it will remove the new entry.

If you'd prefer to do it manually, use Registry Editor, find
"HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID", add the
"{00024500-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}" key below it, add the
"LocalServer32" key below that, and set its default value to
'"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE"
/automation' (substitute the correct path for your machine).

We're currently looking into fixing this without requiring such a
workaround.
