Looking for reasons why I can't export DXF files from Inventor Sheetmetal parts.This has only occurred in the last few days.
Error says "Sketch export failed to initialize translator". This occurs when I run either of my 2 DXF macros AND if I RMB on the part Flat Pattern and Export Face As (or something like that - haven't that in a while). The macros lead me to a debug lin of oDataIO.WriteDataToFile sOut, oDXFfileNAME
I have used these 2 macros for 5+ years and have not experienced this before.
Add-ins shows that the Translator: DXF is Automatic / On Demand.
I found an earlier post here (http://autodesk.lithium.com/t5/Inventor-General/Idw-Dxf-conversion/td-p/4294733) but this seems to be loosely related to Avast. I have Trend (server based). Can't remember any new installations of late apart from Flash.

Nope, it was directly related to Avast
I tried setting exceptions etc. first but nothing helped. System restore sorted it out straight away. I don't know if that was a sledgehammer response, but I was desperate and it worked.

I'm running 2013 so I was able to do all except step 3 as it couldn't find the file. I eventually located it in and ran that :-
D:\Autodesk\Autodesk_Inventor_2013_English_Win_64bit\x64\Inventor\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2013\Bin\RegisterPreR10.exe
(C: is an SSD for the OS and Inventor/Vault (for speed). 😧 is for other programs and data. I'm not sure why the above file is in D:)
Initial testing showed the problem was not fixed.I then copied the file found in 😧 to the folder in your steps and re-run all of the files. Further testing showed the problem was not fixed.

I think that Inventor is not fully registered.
Please follow the steps in the attached PDF.

Bob, did as the PDF instructed (replaced 2014 with 2013). No good. Still can't export/save as DXF. Same error message (Sketch export failed to initialize translator).

Brendan,
Please try the following:
The steps are as follows (Please substitute as appropriate for your version):
Note:
RegistryVersion18.0 = Inventor Release 2014
RegistryVersion17.0 = Inventor Release 2013
RegistryVersion16.0 = Inventor Release 2012
RegistryVersion15.0 = Inventor Release 2011

Bob, I followed the instructions except for step 7 where I could not find USERID (I'm thinking it is a generic entry where I need to substitute my name for USERID). Restarted PC and Inventor. Tested and still not working from RMB on Flat and Save As or from macros.

Correction : I did complete all steps including step 7. I'm having a bad day 😞

Brendan,
Can you save to DXF for other parts?
In so, please either post your part file or private message it to me.
If you can't create a DXF file for any parts please have someone else login and test it.
If it works for them, then you have a damaged user profile.
If not the application is somehow not fully installed.
Please let us know either way.

Bob, on the same PC I logged in as another user and I can export the DXF without any problems.
This is the first time this user has logged onto the machine. Is there anything I can copy from this new profile into my regular profile to fix the problem? Or is there some other fix? I'm at the point of thinking about re-install as this is crippling me.
I have installed or un-installed something that has screwed up an otherwise perfect production machine. I have had no issues exporting DXF files via macro's or RMB and Save Copy As since Inventor 10. The only thing I can remember installing recently is FreeCAD, Google Desktop and Adobe Reader XI.

Brendan,
By being having work logged in as a different user, it tells me the issue is with your user profile.
Please try the following:
"C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2013\Bin\Inventor.exe" /unregister
"C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2013\Bin\Inventor.exe" /uninstall
Please run these from a command prompt.
The /unregister will cause a CER. that you can ignore.
Let is finish before you run the /uninstall.
Let me know how that works.

Bob, I just finished a re-install of Inventor 2013. Initial testing shows the error is fixed. Both macro's and RMB "SAVE COPY AS" all work.
Many, many thnaks for the input you and the others have provided. I'm buggered if I know what caused a perfect production machien to go haywire, but I really don't want to go through that again.
