Can't Edit a Sketch Pattern

I am trying to edit a sketch pattern. I right click on an element of the pattern and choose "Edit Pattern", but when the Rectangular Pattern box comes up, everything is grayed out so I can't edit the pattern:

Does anyone know why I can't edit this pattern?

Did you copy this in from a different model?

I also found it had a lot of duplicate patterns over each other. I had to delete each section twice. (it's not right, but I did get the hole pattern in it)

While it's not right, I can only assume that it was copied in, and that's why it's locked

Yes, the sketch was copied in. Why would this remove the pattern functionality? Is there a way to restore it or a way to copy it without removing the functionality? Also, I don't see any duplicate patterns. The part does contain several patterns, but they are in different locations from each other. When I delete a pattern, it doesn't have another underneath it, although it does seem to leave the unsuppressed elements with the associativity removed.

We know we can copy it ...and we can make it a new sketch.

As for making it work again ... I don't think so.

Can you post the original where it was copied from?

It was probably all the suppressed ones. If the pattern is overlapping and you need to suppress points, it might be easier to do new patterns for each zone ...and not have to suppress points..

I have the same problem  with inventor 2018. After creating pattern (any) it cannot be edited ( defunct buttons in the patern menu).

Whats going on?

Can you attach the file here that exhibits this behavior?

Hi Marcin,

Did you copy and paste the pattern sketch to a different sketch? I am able to reproduce the behavior. It does not look right to me. I will work with the project team to understand it better.

Many thanks!

Hi All,

It is a known problem which was tracked down by ticket INVGEN-12496.

Thanks!

Actually I stumbled upon this behaviour on a copied sketch, but right afterwards I created a brand new sketch in a brand new file and after creating a simple pattern I still couldn't edit the pattern properly. It lets me change the amount and distance but I cannot change direction or geometry, objects.

Apparently this was fixed in 2020: (Inventor 2020 Help | Fixed Issues | Autodesk)
However, I'm now having some troubles in 2023.  I'm ultimately trying to copy a feature from an old part (originally created with 2016 SP2, but since last updated with 2023.2), and 2nd best option is to copy the sketch.

I can copy the sketch, but it will not copy the sketch pattern.  And even in the old part, I cannot edit the Geometry:

I wonder if it has something to do with the sketch also using Project Cut Edges (it looks likely that the original Direction was based off the project cut edge.)

I have the same issue in 2024... no Projected Cut Edges involved. My ideal is a Sketch Block from a template drawing placed in a new file and then exploded and edited, but I think I have this situation even in new parts. Any news?

Best regards, Simon

Can you Attach a *.ipt file here that exhibits this behavior?

Here's a file with 2 sketches: explode  the block in the second sketch and you will see the behaviour - I think! Bringing blocks into existing ipt's helps in placing the sketch elements without them getting accidentally constrained or distorted by geometry that's already there.

Parameter behaviour in imported blocks isn't ideal as well!

Be good to hear ideas around this from other users.

And similarly! I could easily think of about twenty simple "shapes" I could add to this dropdown for every day use - but have no idea how to do such a thing...

Hi! I think this is a limitation unfortunately. The Sketch Pattern is editable. Go to the Blocks folder -> edit the block. Though the block can be edited, the parametric relationship isn't editable. It seems that the parameters were not cloned properly. I assume the block was derived and then the derived feature is deleted, right?

Many thanks!

Same problem in 2024. It only allows to edit existing spacing and count. But I can't add geometry, can't edit direction, can't add second direction. So, if I need to add few objects to my pattern, I should add another pattern with same parameters or remove an existing pattern and create a new one. Very annoying.
