Can't click and drag sketch geometry

Anonymous
Not applicable

I noticed yesterday that whenever I was attempting to modify a sketch, nothing short of using constraint commands on the toolbar or explicitly dimensioning my lines would allow me to move them. I was previously able to click and drag unconstrained sketch geometry (usually the endpoints of lines), but for some reason (I didn't change any settings that I know of), I now cannot and it is making sketch/feature creation excruciating.

I am using Inventor 2016 and this issue does not seem to be related to any specific group of parts.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tina

Hi Tina,

Hate to ask the simple question, but did you restart your PC and/or Inventor?

Hi Tina,

Is it possible the sketch is projected geometry? Could you share the file or record a video?

Many thanks!

For some reason it was indeed the fact that I hadn't restarted Inventor/my computer in a while. Thanks!

Restarting the program and my computer resolved the same problem I was having.  I have never seen software with that behavior.  I watched numerous tutorials on why I couldn't edit a sketch or change the sketch geometry or dimensions and constraints etc.  I'm leaving this comment here in case it helps someone else. If you can't edit a sketch or change the sketch geometry or dimensions and constraints, restart Fusion 360 and/or your computer.

Ah, there is the problem. You have posted in the Autodesk Inventor forum.

Fusion 360 and Inventor are completely different programs.

The bug is still alive!

Three years and six versions later, now in Inventor 2022.2 ... Same problem - Same fix.

I reckon this bug is quite far down on the priority list at Autodesk 😉

Hi! I don't think the issue was ever reported as a defect. As a result, there is no way it can be fixed. If possible, please share an example that exhibits the behavior. It will be very helpful to finding a fix.

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson, thank you for following up on my reply.

Unfortunately, I did not record the issue– but there is not that much to show either 😉

The issue is basically that it is impossible to use “click and drag” to manipulate new or existing sketch lines of all types (lines, arcs, splines) once they are created. This is the case if the lines are either totally or partially un-constrained.

  • The issue persists if you create new sketches of edit existing sketches.
  • You cannot click and drag liners, end points or control points.
  • You can still use the move feature to move liners, end points or control points.

As described in the first post, the issue occured after Inventor had been open for a while (maybe several days) and I have a suspicion that it could be concurrent with using “hibernate” in windows.

Cheers
Søren

Hi Søren,

Many thanks for sharing the detail! I have to admit we are not hearing other users see the same issue. A few things come to mind. Make sure all critical Windows updates are installed and graphics driver is updated. Also, the mouse or 3DConnexion device driver is updated.

When it happens, does it apply to other commands too? Or, it is strictly sketch geometry specific?

Thanks again!

I have same problem i get it quite regularly yes rebooting inventor or cpu clears it but it can happen again in same session, seems random and like a bug. when  it did this time I recroded it. and I checked windows updates and graphics cards updtes both were up to date. mouse drivers are upto date aswell. its just selecting geometry that goes, dimesnion and constarints works fine.

I also have another bug which may be related? when sleceting a "feature dimesnion" from within rectangular pattern I have to click "feature dimesnion" twice before it lets me select. Video 2 attched shows this behaviour , this is a demo using pattern within a skecth geometry,  but is the same for a rect pattern for soilds/features outside of a sketch all as a  multibody part. just tried circular pattern aswell and same applies. @johnsonshiue

Hi! I am wondering if it has something to do with the visible workplane. If the workplane is invisible, are you still able to reproduce it?

Many thanks!
