Best graphics card for Inventor. WIll a GTX work ?

Hello

I am customizing an origin laptop and i plan to use it mostly for CAD designs

The details are below but I am wondering about the graphics card, will an 8gb gtx 980 work well for the product design suite and inventor ?

Or would i need to get the 8gb quadro 5100 ?

I would get it but it cousts more than $2000 more, plus you cant use it to play games at all.

So is my graphics card okay ?

Thanks

Your card is not only okay, it is something to induce envy in most of us on the forum!  Inventor graphics are basically gaming graphics, so the extra $2000 would buy you nothing except product support.  (Disclaimer: this is not the result of experience on my part, just summarizing what others have posted previously).

At home, I have been using a GTX 460 for years (practically a dinosaur now) since Inventor 2010, I think.  I am now using it with Inventor 2014, and I have had zero problems with it.  At work, I use a Quadro 2000, and while it does a fine job, I have never seen anything that would make me think that Quadros are better than GeForce.  At least for Inventor.  Maybe other OpenGL CAD apps would work better with a Quadro, but I doubt it.  These days, the GeForce cards have decent OpenGL support too, so I think this argument in favor of Quadros has lost its teeth.

I'm running the Classified 980 at work and love it.Now if we could get the CPU side of Inventor to utilize all the iCore7 cores we'd be really cooking.
