Automated centerlines

When I'm dimensioning circular components & the section view is a bit crowded, I often pull out a larger scale detail view from the section & dimension that. In order to dimension diameters, I use the automated centerline command to generate the centerline then use linear diameter dimensions. With the last few drawings I have done the automated centerline command has not produced any result unless I expand the detail view so that it includes the centre of the circular part. In the past this was not necessary, Inventor was happy to add a centreline outside of the detail view boundary. Is this a deliberate change or is this behaviour wrong?

Hi Nigel,

Are you talking about the centerline in the Base View? Could you share an example here? I think it could be as designed but I want to double-check and make sure it is true.

Many thanks!

Not the base view, the detail view. In the drawing attached, I had to expand the detail call-out until it included the centreline before the automated centreline command would give a result. After dimensioning I was able to reduce the call-out again. This has happened with the drawings over the past month or 2, previously, the command would produce a centreline outside of the call-out area.

Hi! Do you mind elaborating the steps to see the issue? I have downloaded the files but I don't know how to reproduce the problem.

Many thanks!

This is very strange, I set out to reproduce the problem using the same component. I create a section view then, a detail view of just the edge detail. I use automated centrelines within that small detail view & it now seems to be working properly, creating a centreline outside of the detail view boundary. I've tried this today with a couple of different components & it seems to be working just as it should. Over the past couple of months it was not working.

Either this was a temporary glitch or your influence is so powerful, the mere sight of your name has shocked Inventor back on the straight & narrow path.

Hi Nigel,

Many thanks for letting me know! I suspect there is still a bug somewhere. Please let me know if you find the way to reproduce. I will play around with your files too.

Thanks again!

I am currently experiencing this issue -- Taking a Detail view from a Section and the Detail will not generate the Automated Centerlines from the turned features.

This used to work and I think this is a bug.

I found a separate Autodesk page that says a workaround is using a Smooth Cutout Shape for the Detail. I tried and it still didn't work.

I have attached the part and drawing -- Detail B will not generate Automated Centerlines.

Hi! Many thanks for sharing the files! It does look like a bug to me. I cannot explain this behavior. Let me work with the project team to understand it better.

Thanks again!

Hi! This is indeed a known defect. It was logged as INVGEN-17961, which has not been fixed yet.

Many thanks!
