Autodesk Inventor Specs

Hi,

I'm taking an Autodesk Inventor course in Fall. I'm expecting it to be the 2016 or 2017 version. I own a Lenovo L440 laptop which is 3 years old. It consist of the following specs:

CPU: Intel core i5 4th gen 4300m 2.6 GHz max speed 3.3 GHz dual core 3 MB cache

Graphics: Intel HD graphics 4600

Would this be good enough to run Autodesk Inventor student version? The recommendation is the i7 processor. I really don't want to buy a new laptop.

If you're not getting crazy larger files / assemblies ... 

Rendering etc, something that puts  a lot of load on the PC you should be fine. 

I had an i5 laptop for a bit, doing support.

Just keep it up to dates on Updates, Drivers etc ..

I've run Inventor on some absolutely cheap/low powered laptops...

Is it "fast"... No.. Is it usable for a class... absolutely..

You'll take a hit with the Intel Graphics Card..  Either I missed it or I'm blind but how much RAM do you have in this machine?

Also just keep in mind once you move forward with Inventor you can't turn back..  So you should be using the same Inventor version as you school.

16 GB of ram. Is upgrading the video a better option than buying a new laptop?

Just try it.. and see how it does..

Load the 30 day free demo of 2018 and run through the "Learning Path" (on the "Getting Started Tab") of Inventor..

You will just be the "smart kid" in the class ahead of the rest.. 

Just to reiterate what mark said.. Inventor is NOT backwards compatible.. So if your school is on 2016 you will want to stick with 2016 on your laptop..

If you ever open a file in 2017 and save it you can no longer reopen it in 2016..

But just to try to see how your computer runs load 2018... Then uninstall when happy.. 

I think you will be fine without having to upgrade anything at this time.. Don't assume.. Try and find out..

I think you'll be good ... as long as you're not getting crazy ...

As we've all set ..at worst try it .. you have 30 days.
