I need to make a modification to one part in an inventor assembly...but I have multiple instances of the same part# in the assembly...I am wondering how i can make an extrude on only one of the parts without all of the other instances updating with the cut as well.

At this point you need to make a new part since you don't want the others to update.  To do this..  Under the Assembly Productivity selecting on the ribbon, select the down arrow and select Save and Replace

This will create an exact part with a new name and still leaves all constraints in place.   Open that new part and modify as needed.

One way is copy that part and give it a new name.  Replace instance in assembly with it.

Another, cut the hole as weldment in assembly.  Do it this way only if it is assembled than machine the hole.
