Assembly files being opened with auto generated name

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi All,

Recently when I try to open an assembly file (.iam) e.g. BIO15.iam, Inventor opens the assembly file under a new generated name for example Assembly21 and my assembly appears in the product tree as if its been placed as a sub assembly. This does not happen with every file but it will always happen to the same file.

I just want the assembly to open as it was created and not as a subassembly with a new name.

Ive attached an image of the product tree when i open the assembly file in question.

Thanks for the help.

I am hoping its just a document file setting which needs to be changed? Has any one encountered this issue before.Inventor issue.JPG

Hi,

Maybe you can try with below procedure

from main assembly open the sub assembly as in your case "BIO15.iam"  and check in the top of tree assembly does it showing the same name or showing different name. In your case it must be showing name as "Assembly21" on top off assembly tree. Just click twice on it and give name which you want, say similar to file name "BIO15" as u want, save the main assembly and sub assembly then close it. Now again open main assembly and check whether sub assembly showing same name as file name or name which u given after opening or not!!

I hope it should work for u.

Hi! I believe you are using Future CAD workflow, meaning an older version of Inventor (2017) references an assembly created in a newer version (2018). Could you confirm it?

Many thanks!

I am using Inventor with build number 2017.4.2. The file I am opening is from an older version of inventor. Will updating to 2018 fix the issue?

Thanks

Hi! The only way to get the browser like that is using FutureCAD workflow (or AnyCAD reference workflow). Could you provide an example here?

Many thanks!

I appreciate your assistance, but could you provide some more details of what you would like to see in the example I post?

Also when you mention the browser are you refering to the assembly product tree?

Thanks

Hi! The minimum you can provide is the .iam file you are trying to open in 2017. I can tell immediately if it is a legacy file or a 2018 file.

Many thanks!

I am unable to share the CAD file, However, I checked the iproperties and have seen the file was initially created with Inventor 2015 but was last updated using 2018.1. I am now in the processes of installing 2018. I will update this thread if this solves the issue when it finishes installing.

Many Thanks

I can confirm that the issue was with opening newer files on an older build of inventor.

Thanks to all.

Hello,
Once start Inventor 2019 and close, then choose the file in Windows Explorer > RMB > [iProperties] > [Details] tab.
You can see the [Created with] and [Last update with].
Thanks,
