I'm scared to death everytime I open any idw after
making changes to an iam... never mind an old or multi-page one.

ha ha. so we can both agree that an old AND multi-page would almost be shear terror. -Joe

I avoid multi-page IDW's like the
plague-unfortunately. I mainly had problems since I often need to use IPN's for
exploded views & have usually many other views besides.

This is after having so many problems not
being able to open the IDW later. Lot's of work had to be redone. It has
been suggested to me back during 5.3 by Autodesk & VAR to avoid the practice
using more than a few sheets. There were some bugs regarding using non
standard views, section views etc.

So that's what I do at great inconvenience.
Hopefully, there will be a day when we don't have to say prayers & sacrifice
small animals to the CAD software gods in order that we can use multi-sheet
IDW's.

Multi-sheet idw's and jumping off cliffs are
synonomous.

I've done about two dozen or more multi-page (2-5 pages) detail and
assembly IDWs over the past two releases (R5 & R6) that are now being
worked on in R7. No loss of data, no loss of views. Minor corrections
for dimensions that lost an end or balloons that lost their part.

No anxiety attacks or apprehension when opening IDWs.

I often exceed ten pages in an .idw without too many problems. (Lots of
section views.) This tool was design to handle large assemblies right?

I'm not scared of nothin ;>O......

Almost all my projects are between 3 and 17 11x17
pages. I had problems in the past but that was, believe it or not, contributed
to the Dell machine I was using. Every time I would DA a project the IDW file
would slowly fall apart. This got worse after I formatted,  upgraded from
NT to Win 2000 and installed R5.3. The machine became unusable. At this point, I
have had nothing but trouble with computers containing proprietary
hardware.

As for fear of opening an idw after changing a large assembly, I too share that sentiment.

I will join this club I too scared thats why solidworks , Iron cad and solid edge are doing some demos for me and giving me a 4 month trail time to find a better cad if autodesk is not going to step up and fix this (Edited) I most do what is better for the company I lost $15,000 in fixing the IDW's for this one job we are doing.

To add to my previous thread, I have had no
problems since I got my Boxx system (This is not a sales pitch). I did have to
fix the existing IDW created on the old machine but no new problems. Multiple
sheet IDW's, not a problem.

I don't have a problem since 5.3 with multy sheets my problem is some views update and some do not and the sales pitch is they will update all views NOT oh don't get me going this is a soft spot

I understand! I think this is just as bad as the
line scale problem in R7. But, I have a fix for most of the view update problems
that I have encountered. I made a Marco that selects Rebuild All 15 times in
the assembly. It seams to fix all of my assembly view updates and most of
my part updates in the IDW views. I haven't tried using this when I have a
stubborn part view yet but I think it would fix that also. I would think that
using Rebuild All only once would be enough for any part file, but for some
reason it takes about 10 to 15 times in the assembly. I would also mention that
as I get less and less projects from R5.3 and earlier, I seam to have less
problems.

Make sure your dealer rep knows.... complaining here probably wouldn't be as sucessful as getting the sales side of ADSK to realize that these problems amount to real lost business.

Matt, it's cool that you found a fix, but it's still ridiculous that you had to write your own macro.....and 15!! times. ha ha. that cracked me up. and back to my original post....i don't have 'alot' of problems with my idw's at all. it's just that fact that when i DO open (especially an old one), it's like i hit the open button, then run, and come back a few minutes later to see if everything was cool. just scarily unstable. kinda like if you were living with a rabid dog that was your pet - you never know when it's going to turn on you. -Joe

I feel your pain. You know, When I bought Inventor
R2 the So******ks rep's still tried to get me to change my mind. They said they
had worked for Autodesk and that I would not like the way Autodesk does things.
Well, that's all they said but I think I now know what they were trying to
say.
