adding notches around a curve.

hey!

i have a project i am working on where i need to space notches of a set size along the edge of a curve. weather it be arcs, ellipsis, or splines. any idea how to do this? if it was just a circle i could just use a circular array. in other words i need to make something similar to image 1, on a line similar to either shape on image 2. image 2 is an exaggerated example. just wanting to know 3 things. is it possible on both the ellipse and the spline, how to do it, and if i can make the notch automatically trim the curve that the pattern is following(like the top notch in image 1). thankyou.

And before anyone asks no there is no file to attach, this is like asking how do i draw a box in inventor or how do i use the trim command. a file shouldn't be needed to help answer.

Yes, it's possible.  Use a rectangular pattern, and choose the curve for Direction 1.

However.... do not do this in a sketch!!  Create one notch of whatever shape, then pattern that feature along the edge using a rectangular feature pattern.  Sketch patterns are (almost) always a more difficult, less robust way to achieve your goal.  As you have found, they don't automatically trim adjacent geometry, nor do they create important constraints to adjacent geometry.

If you want some additional help, post your file and images of what you're trying to create.  And please, always, start by letting us know what version of Inventor you're using.

this is almost perfect! but now i need to get the shape to rotate. it keeps the same orientation as the original notch.

Edit the pattern feature, expand the dialog with the << button, and there you will find the orientation controls.
