adaptivity

I follow the simple tutorial but I run into a problem
I want to adap a hole to another part
1)I RC the feature(hole) and adapt it
2)I load this part into the assembly where the hole on the first part will adapt through another part.
3)I RC the part I load in with the adaptive hole feature and it won't let me choose adaptive(gray)?? does anyone know why?

Is this part adaptive in somewhere else? Usually, this is the reason the adaptive command grayed out. I created a brand new part and following you steps. There is no problem for me to make it adaptive.

I found my answer, I don't think you can do adaptivity to sheet metal.

I loaded my two pieces of SM and nothing.
I load a part (protrusion)with a hole with exact same steps and when I RC the part with the adaptive hole..it will let me!

So my last question is, is it possible to adpat sheet metal or maybe I am going in the wrong direction?

I will create a new part and try it, can't hurt

yeah it worked, I will write this or type this down so I don't have to come back to the forums down the road for this one. Thnak you

Adaptivity can work with sheet metal. Here is what I tried:
1. create a sheet metal part
2. Add a hole to the part
3. make the hole adaptive
4. save the part
5. create an assembly and place the part in the assembly
6. make the part adaptive.

I don't have any problem. Is your steps different from mine? Can you post your data set in which you can not make the part adaptive?

thanks,

How do you tell where else it is adaptive to?

Also, I have one part I use alot in my assemblies
that for some reason I can perform adaptive operations
on it, but none of them trigger the adaptive flag in
the browser, and if I open the document and go to
Document settings, "Adaptively used in Assembly"
is totally greyed out and not selectable. It seems
I CAN turn adaptivity on manually on the part in the
browser though. Mind you, I'm not complaining, I actually
like it this way, I was just trying to figure out why
it is doing that.

I never have problems making things adaptive (try hard never to do that), I
have problems turning adaptivity off. Consequently, if I forget to Ctrl
project (where I Break Link/add construction geometry/geo constrain it/dim
the new locating geometry/delete fixed geometry, turn the dims hard) ... no
matter what ... I back out because if I let it stand too long, the sketch
will remain adaptive forever with seemingly no way to turn it off. The other
day I did it again; tried just un-ticking adaptivity but the sketch
adpitivity wouldn't go off even after Return (to the Top Level) and
un-ticking adaptivity on the browser entry. Drop down, look at the sketch
and it's the only thing with the adaptivity icon in the whole browser and no
way to turn it off. At work there must be hundreds of assemblies with
adaptive "this-and-that" which can't be turned off. Much as I've seen this
(at least in the last few releases) I know you guys must be aware of it.
What, is, up, with, that? Is there a way to get rid of those instances of
adaptivity? Bugs heck out of me seeing that nonsense in the browser and no
tell'n how much time I've wasted trying to find it adaptive somewhere else
when clearly, if it happens when I just then made it adaptive, being
adaptive elsewhere doesn't apply ... not my idea of tidy that.

Bob,

The only thing I can think of is that you used "Save copy as" to make copy of this part file. In this way, Inventor treats the copy as a new part and allow you use it adaptively.

Bob,

My previous reply is based on the assumption that the part is used in one of other assemblys as adaptive (trigger the adaptivity flag in browser as you said). If this is not the case, the original part can be used in an assembly as adaptive without any problem. Some features in the part show adaptive flag does not mean this part has already been used in assembly as adaptive.
