Import into AutoCAD (3DSIN), then import the 3D data into Inventor.

3ds files tend to be coursely faceted surfaces generally of little use in Inventor other than for reference in starting over.

I have managed to open the .3ds in autocad... saved it as a .dwg and when i am importing it in inventor (open>option>import) i am bloked by a message saying that my "file is already opened in autoCAD, please close it and retry". Even with autocad closed and a cumputer restarted i am block by the same message.

Did you look at the file in AutoCAD?

It appears to be exceptionally poor quality.  Is that what you really want - a faceted shade that looks something like a wadded up sheet of paper?

If so, delete the bulb - don't need that and it can be easily modeled as one revolve solid rather than thousands upon thousands of tiny planar faceted surfaces.

Remove the text near the top of the shade.

Check this area (see image - lower right corner).

Yes, all the design of this lamp is about the irregular triangles in it s form. Have a look at the photo of it attached.

I am trying to repeat this irregular triangularisation into Inventor. For that i tought using my client 3ds file.

Maybe one of you guys would have a idea how to creat this pattern into inventor?

thanks for the help!

Accepted solution

Open in MAX, export as StereoLithography (stl)

Open the stl file in IV 2013

I don't know what yoru intent is, but at least you can now see it in IV

i have to book mark this page.

Hope autodesk will release an apps that support max file, something like nitrous realistic 3d display on a tablet. IPM viewer is cool though but takes me few step to do the convert from max to dwg to inventor

I can see the stl file, but it won't allow it to be shown in a drawing. (idw)

which makes it useless. 😞

stl files are of little use other than for 3D printing.

If you want it on 2D drawing - run the AutodeskMeshEnabler to convert the mesh to a solid.

It Works! But there is a problem, when i open my stl (converted) part in IV, it's scale is different. For example 70 cm length seems 70 mm.

Anyone else see this problem before?

You have replied to a 5-yr old thread that has been solved.

It probably would have been better to start a new thread and add url to this thread as reference.

Scale.png

You can easily scale your model (probably a difference between inch and mm or cm units).
