3D Transform - Edit 3D sketch points using absolute coordinate values

We recently upgraded from Inventor 2016 to 2018.

 

Our workflow requires the ability to edit the absolute coordinate values for existing 3D sketch points.

 

In 2016, we did the following:

  1. Right-click the 3D sketch point
  2. 3D Move/Rotate
  3. Precise Input
  4. Enter absolute X, Y, Z coordinate values
  5. OK

Now in 2018, we have no issues entering absolute values when creating a new 3D sketch point...

But... when we try to edit the values, we seem to be limited to entering only X, Y, Z values relative to its previous location:

Does anyone know the combination of settings required to edit with absolute coordinate values?  We are stumped, and I'm sure it's a simple solution.

You are correct, Autodesk has removed the ability to use Absolute coordinates in the 3D Tranform tool.  I would like to suggest a different work flow in order to give you the ability to edit your 3D sketch using Absolute coordinates.  I propose you start your model using Grounded Workpoints which can then be easily used as your 3D Sketch points.  This method will give you the ability to edit the Grounded Workpoints using either Absolute or Relative dimensions and the 3D sketch will update automatically when you are finished.

 

Take a look at my screencast and see if this works for you.  I have used Ground Workpoints for my 3D sketches for years since I really do not care for entering 3D coordinates during any 3D sketching.  I have always found it more controllable.

Hi! The command is still there. You can add it back to the Marking Menu. Go to Tools -> Customize -> Marking Menu. Set Environment to "3D Sketch" and Sub-Environment to "3D Point." You will see 3D Move/Rotate on the right. Simply drag it and drop it to an empty spot in the Marking Menu.

An additional question to this topic. Since I work a lot with parameters (external excel file), I would like to define the points position with  parameters. If, in the grounded point dialog box (see screenshot), I enter parameter names for the x,y and z positions, the point goes exactly to the desired coordinate. However, if I change the parameter value afterwards, either in excel or in the Inventor Parameter table, it is not updated in the model. Is this a feature or a bug? Is there another way to achieve such functionality.

Hi Gilbert,

 

Unfortunately, this is as design per 3D Move/Rotate command. It is because the movement is not captured or constrained by dimensions. Even though you enter parameters to the input boxes, it does not mean the parametric relationship has been established. Only the values have been captured. This behavior is unique to 3D Move/Rotate for its non-parametric nature. It is also why the command is removed from Marking Menu by default.

If you want to drive the point coordinates by parameters, you will need to create dimensions between the point and origin planes. Then equate the model parameters to the desirable parameters you entered.
