Yeah I do 3D sketches pretty often now for more complicated wire runs. You can definitely do them without a 2D sketch. I think the key your lacking is to turn the visibility of your origin planes on and dimension 3D sketch points to all three. This also gives you the surprisingly nice ability to have negative dimensions.
