3D PDF Export fails

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hello,

I am having problems with the Export to PDF function. I load one of the Inventor sample models, blower.iam into Inventor 2017, and try to export to 3D PDF,  I get a list of errors and no PDF.  I am attaching the a screen shot of the version of Inventor I am using, a screen shot of the errors that were displayed and the zipped .iam file.

Regards,

Hey guys, I found a temporary solution, although not optimal.

It seems that inventor struggles to convert heavy assemblies with several layers. In addition, if you have several LOD's, View Reps, and adaptivity this adds to the complexity in producing a 3D PDF.

Seems like the converter struggles keeping track of all model dependencies.

Anyway, I found that if you STEP out your model, then STEP it back in temporarily, producing a 3D PDF works right away. I know this breaks any conditions in your model (i.e. LODS, View Reps, Constraints) unfortunately this is what def works for me.

Anyway, give it try and see if you can live with it for now while ADESK figures it out.

Cheers,

OJ

@Anonymous

I'll post the same thing here.. Have you loaded Service Pack 1 for Inventor 2017.. They did some work to fix most of the issues there.. Please install that if you haven't and try again.. If its still not working then please let us know so someone from Autodesk can get your model to investigate..

Just so you know, we're seeing the same behavior in an Assembly-Weldment.
i.e. "Machining", "Preparation" and "Welds" not showing in a 3D PDF.

Inventor Weldment Assembly:                                                               3D PDF

For those struggling with welded assemblies you can create a shrinkwrap substitute LOD and publish that ipt to 3D PDF; or start a new part and use derive to bring in the weldment asm.

This works however you can't get the welding symbols to show up.

I have attempted to STEP out and back with no different results.

When Inventor crashes, it gives no indication; just disappears from the Task Manager.  It is still under Processes, but even letting it run over night produces no different results.

We are running the latest SP and updates, and have the latest templates.  The 3D PDF is a major FAIL from Autodesk; both in releasing it too soon and in the delay in fixing it.

@kennyj

Kenny, please do a pack and go of your assembly and fire it off to @Jeff.T for investigation.. The more people that flood his email with problem 3DPDF files the better the chance that Autodesk has of fixing these problems..

Please everyone that has installed the latest updates/service packs and is still having problems perform a pack and go on your trouble assemblies and email them to Jeff at this email address provided earlier in this topic.  [email protected]

Can you confirm what service packs/ updates you have installed?

When you step it back in, try changing the color of the solid and see if it will export to 3D PDF then.

Thanks,

Kirk

Thank you, mgyvr, We cannot share our models publicly unfortunately. We did install R3 that just came out, and are making better progress. With low visual, one view rep and only the populated properties, it took 30 minutes to create a ~1400 part assembly. The file size was 40 mb. The other 3D Plug-ins do this in a few minutes and have file sizes less than 18mb. The colors change slightly and the lighting is harsh, even selecting other light options. But still, progress; we got a 3D PDF!

Accepted solution

Hi all,

I waited for the last update to mingle into this discussion. For my understanding update 3 solved the 3D PDF Export issue.

@Anonymous, as you are the original poster here, I'd like to hear your opinion on this.

If you agree with the results, please mark the post with the answer as accepted solution or feel free to tell us your experience and mark your post as solution.

If you disagree, though, please continue the conversion.

Thank you for this great catch.

Best Regards

I have just installed IV 2017 Professional with update 3 and so far have been unable to export a 3D PDF without errors.  The attached screenshots show an attempt to export a simple extruded cylinder part.

Any ideas to fix this problem would be most appreciated.

Roger ...

I see you have the update ...but have you downloaded the newest templates that were part of R1?

These did a lot to resolve it...

Also have you looked at the assembly to see what part is causing the error?

Michael..

Thanks for the instant reply.  I will look into the templates issue and see if it helps.

I get failure even for the simplest part- no assembly needed.   I retrospectively added the error screenshot which did not attach first time around for some reason.

Just an update to say that I downloaded the revised templates but unfortunately obtain the same error on trying to create a 3D PDF of even the simplest part using the default settings in the 'Publish 3D PDF' dialog.  It seems Autodesk still have some work to do in this area.

I found a alternative way of creating the 3d pdf for larg assemblies. Since i found Inventor 3D pdf works fine with small parts, and when it comes to large assemblies, it cannot handle it, and throw up the error and every one have to do research on where the problem is.

Now i tried an alternative way.

I made the assembly as a simplified part and saved that part just for the 3d pdf and now export the simplified part as 3d pdf. this takes time, but it generated the 3d pdf.

I thought this might help

Another Alternative.

If you had the Tetra4D Converter that worked in 2016 (or earlier).

What we have been doing is exporting from Inventor 2017 in STEP format.  Then, opening a Tetra3D template that already has a simplified 3D model.  Tetra has a Replace 3D option, so we replace the simple model with the Inventor 2017 STEP.  Seems to be the solution until the Inventor 3D PDF becomes more robust.  Another benefit is the file sizes are much smaller, as well.

Hope this helps anyone who still has their Tetra4D plugins.

Thanks

But the Tetra 3D is an additional Addon which you have to buy as a subscription, so you have already invested in a tool and you are now reinvesting on it.

So my thought was using the existing resource effectively without over spending on another extra tool.

Thanks
