2023 Inventor Hangs randomly

Frequently when using Inventor, it will hang for no apparent reason.
It will happen more frequently on opening or closing a file, but also happens during normal working conditions.

Typical signs are an unresponsive inventor UI, CPU usage of between 10 and 15% (classed as very high power usage) and needing to force close using task manager.

There is no event in event viewer, and if the program is left for long enough it will sometimes eventually revert to its "pre-hang state" i.e. files will not open or close, or tasks are not completed but inventor will become responsive again and the task can be reattempted. This will take somewhere north of half an hour.

Is anyone else experiencing issues similar to this?
I have reinstalled inventor and Vault, and there is no noticeable improvement.

Hi Steven,

Please install Inventor 2023.2 update. Also, if you use Vault 2023, please install Vault 2023.2 update (client and server). Also, all critical Windows updates need to be installed and the graphics driver should be updated,

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson,

I am up to date on all my updates.

Inventor still hangs randomly but primarily when saving, editing, and closing.

The hanging on saving is definitely a problem, as it's 50/50 if saving will cause me to lose work.

Any update on this one?

@Steven.Farrow8NPGF

Can you share some information on your system specs, network conditions, etc.?  Perhaps there is a clue in there somewhere.  How large are the files you are working with when you see this behavior?

Hi Chris,

I am running an HP Z book, Windows 10 pro.

i9-11950H, 64GB RAM, NVIDIA RTX A2000 Laptop GPU.

File size ranges from sub 100 KB single feature parts through to 32,556 KB assemblies - it can happen on any file.

Network is hard wired to company server, where the vault lives, speeds are approx. 910 Mbps down and 550Mbps up using Ookla.

As to the exact configuration of the network I am not too sure.

Anything jump out at you in that?

Cheers for your help,

Steven Farrow

Hi Steven,

The behaviors do sound troubling. A user recently reported that the Routed System:Cable&Harness Add-In seems to be related to the hang. But, I don't have a proof. Nor do we see the behavior internally.

Based on your description, you should never encounter any performance issue. If you don't use Cable&Harness workflows, try disabling it and see if it helps. Another option to try is to set the following environment variable.

Close Inventor and go to Control Panel -> System -> Advanced System Settings -> Environment Variable -> add "DYNAMIC_LOAD_APPLETS" and set it to 0.

Restart Inventor.

It may slow down Inventor startup a tiny bit (unnoticeable). But, it ensures all dlls are loaded on startup, as opposed to loading on demand.

Many thanks!

Thanks for your suggestions Johnson. I will try those fixes and see how it goes.

Any trick to disabling the cable and harness routing? It is greyed out in my add in options dialog.

I will report back if it seems to have worked

I have not been able to disable the cable and harness routing. Any ideas how to do this?

The other point you asked me to do has not improved the situation at this stage

Hi Steven,

Restart Inventor and go to Tools -> Add-Ins -> find the Cable&Harness add-in from the list -> uncheck both boxes. Then try the workflow that hangs Inventor randomly.

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson,
This hasn't worked and I continue to have these issues

Any further ideas as to what could be causing this?

I see similar "slow down".

IV 2023.2 and Vault Pro 2023.2.

Just got one within last hour.

Switched to browser, back to IV and UI not responding.  It return respond within a minute.

Hi @Frederick_Law

I presume you are referring to the hang related to switching from a model document back to Home. If so, this is related to

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-forum/iv2023-home-screen-thumbnails-state-glyph/m-p/11715915...

Thanks

@Frederick_Law  this does not sound similar to my issue.

Once it hangs it never comes back, even when left overnight.

I suggest you look for solutions elsewhere in the forum, or start a new thread.

I would hate for a proposed solution here to cause you new issues you didn't have before 🙂

No. Switch from IV to Google Chrome to IV again and IV stop responding for
a minute or two.

Please take this discussion elsewhere. It is not related to the issue in question on this thread

I have been with the same "Hang" problem after upgrading from Inventor Pro 2021 to 2023 from this week on Tuesday (Mar. 19, 2024), and never had this issue in Inventor Pro 2021, especially for rotating a model with "Shift" key and mouse, sometimes it hangs for around 1min and have to wait. sometimes got Inventor totally crash.

Please help.

Hi! I suspect you are using Shift+MMB to rotate the view. On 2023, such orbit is set to the Pivot Orbit, which needs to lock to a virtual center. Depending on the geometry complexity, such compute may take some time. To test this theory, click on the Orbit command under ViewCube. Does it work faster? On 2024, there is an option to change the Pivot Orbit to the regular Orbit.

Another possibility is about the need to refine geometry on Zoom in/out and Pan. Go to Tools -> App Options -> Display -> check "Disable automatic refinement." This option will not regenerate the graphics during Zoom, Pan, and Orbit. To refine the graphics, go to View -> Refine Appearance.

How much system RAM and graphics RAM does your machine have?

Many thanks!
