2018 Measure tool slow / freezing

I love many of the enhancements of the new measure tool, but I notice that in some circumstances, it is slow to load. (usually 1 to a couple of seconds)

And then one day I import a dwg of moderate complexity . . . one of those that autocad has no trouble with, but bogs inventor down. . . and every time I load the measure tool, inventor just freezes  (before I can click on anything to measure).  For me, using the measure tool is second nature, and before I realize what I have done . . . . . . . . . oh crap, not again! and I force close inventor.

Anybody else seeing this?  Or am I just super special?

-Aaron

yes you are special Smiley Wink

Have you tried the "Inventor Reset Utility"? <--try this first.. (Its in the Autodesk folder in your Windows start/app menu)

How about running a repair install if that fails..?

No Luck:  I ran the inventor reset utility and did a repair install, neither solution worked.

Try this on for size: I have attached a sample file of one of my imported dwg's, with about 90% of the information removed.  It takes my computer about 35 seconds between when I load the measure tool and when I can take a measurement.  If I leave the original information intact, the wait time is much much longer.  On a second file I am working with . . . Lets just say I dont have all day to take one measurement!   🙂

Please let me know how your computer / installation reacts to this file.  Thanks!

@imajar Clearly a file specific issue as yes that file causes problems..

@Anonymous

Johnson can you comment on what the issue is here?

This file is really causing issues with the measure tool.

@johnsonshiue (I think I sent the last shoutout to your old account)..

Johnson can you take a look at the attached file a few posts up..

It causes a big delay on my machine too when trying to use the measure tool first time..

Hi! Many thanks for providing the example! Something is not working right here. It seems to have certain geometry within the sketch block. I am able to see the hang on my machine. I will work with the project team to understand the behavior better.

Thanks again!

Well, I have this problem too with measure tool.

Now 3 months is gone... is this problem solved?

Hi! I am aware of the issue. This has something to do with a lot of nested loops. The Measure command may start analyzing the loops. Do you have an example to share? You may want to pre-select the geometry before starting Measure command.

Many thanks!

Usually I place parts and assemblies on top of DWG-layout. Then I measure (from part to part or from part to dwg-line),

and Inventor crashes. It's DWG-related (if assembly has no DWG, no freezing), but not all AutoCAD DWGs.

I don't have dwg to share because it's related to work.

Why does measure tool analyze the loops anyway?

I also originally have this issue with imported dwg files - which I frequency use as reference data.

I also have this issue in a very large sketch created entirely within Inventor - which I use as a master layout for an assembly.  The lag in that file is smaller than with imported dwg-s.  About 2 seconds-ish, but getting worse as the layout increases in size.  -Unfortunately I cannot share this file.

Hi! It is because 2018 Measure command is capable of measuring various geometric type. In the past, there are 4 different individual Measure tools (Angle, Length, Area, and Loop). Now they are all combined into one. Have you try pre-selecting the geometry before doing Measure command?

Many thanks!

My team is having the same issue on different systems with different build versions of Windows 10 Pro.

The project has two imported Sketch Blocks in the XY and the YZ planes.

I've tested the following in the Assembly:

  1. Visibility of both Sketch Blocks XY and YZ turned off and Visibility of Assembly and Parts turned on; Measure Tool worked
  2. Visibility of either Sketch Block turned on and Visibility of Assembly and Parts turned off; Measure Tool froze
  3. Pre-select the geometry first with either Sketch Block or the Assembly; Inventor froze in all scenarios

I've tested within the Layout only:

  1. Visibility of both Sketch Blocks XY and YZ turned off; Measure Tool worked
  2. Visibility of either Sketch Block turned on; Measure Tool froze

Inventor Generated Sketch Blocks:

  1. No issue

So, it looks like it's got something to do with the imported dwg files converted to sketch blocks. This has not been an issue in the past and the same process was used to convert the dwg files to sketch blocks.

For the most part, we're very much liking this iteration of Inventor but this particular issue is really bogging us down and we'd GREATLY appreciate it if your team can figure out where the glitch is.

Thanks,

Chris

I believe so if you mean by pre-select actually selecting the geometry first before opening the Measure Tool.  As, I said above, it freezes up.

For me, preselecting the geometry kind of works but is not a solution:

If I am in a sketch and preselect the geometry, I can get an instant measurement.  BUT:  as soon as the mouse leaves the measure window and hovers over anything else, the measure tool freezes, so I have to remember to close the measure tool after each use.

If I am in an assembly with the problematic sketch visible, same problem as above.

Even though there is a workaround, I am hopeful that this issue can be fixed quickly.  It is so easy to forget that a specific sketch has this problem.  Over the last few weeks, I try to keep the problematic sketches hidden (yes, I have this problem with multiple sketches) , but the few times I turn then on , I forget about the measure tool dilemma and freeze inventor.  Thank you for your quick responses on this.

Hi Johnson,

This is still being an issue.  Today I clicked the measuring tool by accident and lost about an hour's worth of work.  Has there been any progress made on your team's end to get this cleared up?

Other than that issue, I'm very please with the new version of Inventor so far.

Thanks so much!

Hi Chris,

I am very sorry that we have not found a good solution yet. The issue here is that Measure command is now consolidated. The ability to measure a loop is built in to the new Measure command. When loops are detected, it will try to find out where those loops are. The only option I am aware is to hide such loop-heavy geometry when you don't need to measure it. We are still investigating for a good solution.

Many thanks!

Thanks Johnson!

I'll keep an eye out for any updates.

In the meantime, I'll just toggle the  background sketches on only when I need them and toggle them off as soon as I don't.

Cheers!

Hi! Indeed, the solution is still being investigated. I cannot guarantee when it will be fixed. Another alternative workflow aside from making the heavy-loop sketch or dwg underlay invisible, you can place the part in an assembly and do measurement in the assembly. It should not hang because the loop select mode is disabled in assembly.

Many thanks!

It hangs for me in assemblies - that is usually where I get in trouble because in large assemblies it is easy to forget what sketches are on or off.

The best solution I have come up with is to copy critical elements from the problem sketches to a working sketch - which I can keep visible in my assemblies.  I might have to refer to the original problem sketch sometimes, but not nearly as often.  Not so much a work around as minimizing crashes.

If you have to keep the problem sketch open - then the only thing that works is preselect geometry as Johnson suggests and hope that you don't have to do that in an assembly.
