2018.1 Update: fails export file "step"

After a lot of test I'ave understand that in 2018.1 update there is a bug. When I export a step file from a shrinkwrap ipt, step file is incomplete. I'ave try to change all options inside export step command, but the result was the same.
So to fix this problem I'ave removed 2018.1 update.

Can you share a model with us or is it any file that fails for you?

Sorry, but i can't send any 3d file because they are of my customer.

The assemblies that I've problems are with "normal" parts, sheet metal parts and geometry imported from step.

I repeat, I've do the same operation with or without installed 2018.1 update and with utpdate installed everytime the step files was wrong. In the step file imported was missing some geometry.

Hi Mauro,

The behavior sounds like geometry specific. I suspect there might be preexiting bad bodies. Would you be able to simplify the model to the just the offending faces and then share the simplified model? It would be very helpful to finding the problem. Please feel free to send me the files directly (johnson.shiue@autodesk.com).

Many thanks!

Hi johnsonshiue

sorry for the delay of the answer. I was waiting new uptade of inventor, to try if the problem will be fix. So I have istalled the update 2018.1.2 but the problem is not fix. I repete, if I remove all the update the problem is fix.
Now I create a official request in the subscription support page.

Regards

Mauro

Hi Mauro,

This is indeed a known issue in 2018, which we are actively working on a solution. The problem stems from the ability to handle non-manifold geometry. The so-called non-manifold geometry has one edge shared by more than two faces. Usually, there should be only two faces sharing an edge. When three or more faces share one edge, it creates a dilemma causing manufacturability problems.

For this particular case, Inventor fails to properly export such geometry as STEP. The shrinkwrap (derive assembly) part probably gets non-manifold geometry because all parts are joined as a body in a part. Like I said, we are actively working on a solution targeting 2018.2 Update. In the meantime, if you need the complete STEP file from the given dataset, you could edit the shrinkwrap part and set the output type to multiple solids or composite. Then STEP export should work fine. Could you try it?

Many thanks!

Hi johnsonshiue,

For us this is a big problem, we have created many shrinkwrap not "multybody", for ours machines and ours plants and customers we ask step files many times.
I have installed the update 2018.1 and 2018.1.2 because inventor was very instable.
Second you how much time is necessery to fix this problem?

regards

Mauro

Hi! The fix is targeting 2018.2. I cannot comment on when it will be available but it is definitely not this month. Have you reported it to Autodesk Product Support?

Many thanks!

I've just had this same problem with 2018. It's a welded sheet metal part in an assembly with some PEMs. The part (ipt) file that was made into a step opens fine but the assembly with the part & welds in it does not. I then went & made the step file with 2016 & had no issues. I'd be happy to send my files to Autodesk support if that helps.

Hi! The issue is indeed resolved as of the latest internal build targeting 2018.2 Update. If you have access to Inventor Beta site, you can download the Beta version of the Update to try it. Please feel free to sign up Inventor Beta program at https://bit.ly/InventorBeta.

Many thanks!
