2017 crashes at part creation

Installing 2017 Inventor on a new Dell 5560 laptop with a T1200 Nvidia card. Install went fine, program opens fine, but when I try to create a new part or open an existing part, it crashes and closes. No error report comes up. Tried setting graphics to conservative, and also tried clicking the software button, and still no luck. I've installed the 2017.2 and 2017.3 updates. We are upgrading to 2021 in December, so I loaded the 2021 Inventor deployment and then it worked fine. We can't run the 2021 yet because our Vault is not ready yet, so we are forced to run 2017 for now. Any ideas?

@Anonymous

Hi.  Just reaching here, but can you look at Windows Event Viewer and see if there is anything that shows up at the time of the crashes?  Also, what are the specs on that machine in terms of RAM?

It has 32GB or RAM. I've looked in the history of the Event Viewer, but haven't seen anything. I'll try to watch it while it's loading and crashing and see if anything happens. I'm currently loading a different deployment of 2017, so I'll see if that works first. Thanks.

I'd like to try 2017.4.4 update, but there are no 2017 updates on the site any longer.

Windows Event Viewer shows no errors for anything Autodesk related.

Hi John,

The symptom you described does sound graphics related. Please make sure graphics driver is updated and all critical Windows updates are installed.

Many thanks!

Yes, driver is up to date, and all windows updates are current. Funny thing is, when I load 2021 Inventor, it launches and opens a part without issue. So that tells me it's not so much a graphics card issue. I think anyway. If I find a solution, I'll post it up. As of now, it's going back to the IT group and see if they can make any headway on it. Thanks for those that made suggestions.

Hi John,

I did a quick search on "Autodesk Inventor 2017 crash open." A few threads pop up. The only thing you may want to try is to Repair Install. Go to Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Uninstall -> find Autodesk Inventor Pro 2017 -> right-click -> Repair Install.

Many thanks!

Hi, I did try this as well. It didn't change anything, still would crash at part creation.

Thank You

Hi John,

I tried looking for the crash report you submitted. I did see some reports from your domain but not from you. Could you send in the report. I would like to understand the crash better.

Many thanks!

No crash report pops up. The software just closes and nothing comes up for a crash report. Is there another place where they get saved that I could look for?

Hi John,

This is puzzling. Are you running any non-Autodesk add-in? If yes, disable them. Another thing to try. Go to Command Prompt (CMD). Type in the following command.

"C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2017\Bin\Inventor.exe" /install

Also go to File Explorer -> %temp% -> clean all temporary files.

Many thanks!
