Sean, folks,
What about RSS?
-Pete
(let's see what my new sig looks like...)
It has taken me 5 minutes to login, and access the Inventor NG. It took one minute to access this page so that I could post this message. It would have taken 5 seconds via NNTP. Congratulations Autodesk, you have managed to kill the Golden Calf.
As to RSS. I have absolutely no reason to get useless replies cluttering my inbox. I get enough of those already from adobe's site. I can't even get an administrator there to kill the one feed that I foolishly selected.
This discussion group has lost all the value it once had.

RSS is good for reading, but unless I am wrong, you can't reply via RSS. So NNTP is still a better solution.
I had used the newsreader for several years, up until about 3 years ago. When I moved over to the web based reader, I did not really like it at first... but I have gotten used to it. I agree with all of the issues that you bring up. It is nice to be able to scroll thru all the messages.
If you are only seeing 15 or so posts on one page, you can change that. Go to the "My Settings" link on the upper right. There you will find the Preference tab. Go to the linear layout and you can change the number of posts per page.
One thing that I like over this new web design is the "My Subscriptions" over on the right that shows what messages I am subscribed to. You had to jump thru hoops to find it in the old version.
They also made it so we could add a signature to our posts. Another welcomed improvement is that we can now post more than one attachment. This may not mean much to the NTTP user because they could already do both of them.
I remember reading your posts over the years, and I hope we don't loose you over this. Give the web side a little time, hopefully you will grow to like it.
I am trying to keep an open mind, but have to agree with everything Walt said. I can understand that online forums give better control to the administrators, but I have yet to see one hold a candle to NNTP for user functionality.
I don't get here as often as I used to, and I just cant see clicking through 15 to 20 pages of posts just to see if any topics peak my interest. These forums have grown so big (of course they may start to shrink now) that even with NNTP it takes a lot of time out of a day to look through all the posts. I just can't see doubling or tripling that amount of time.
Interesting... this is one of the few places I have seen that my built in Firefox spell check doesn't work. 😞
The subscriptions flag is not working. I've turned off all subscription notifications and I'm still getting them!
To be fair, speed is much better on Saturday. However, it still does not match the convenience of NNTP. I'll give it a fair try, but I hope that when the weekend is over, the speed stays constant. That will be the test.
Glad I never used NNTP...sounds like it sucked
Peter:
On the one hand there's Moore's law that predicts a doubling of CPU power every 18 months.
On the other hand we have the people developing web based applications that are somehow supposed to improve our lives yet seem to cut usability in half every 18 months.
I just wish the emporer would put on some clothes rather than persuading the masses that he has some.

OK
One question.
I replied to Peter Maxsfield way up this list but my reply is at the bottom of the intial post by Sean. Is this as intended or is there an obscure setting that will correct this?
OK - found that button.
I've now spent as much time navigating through one thread as I would have checking all of the new messages. I'm out of here.
So far this board is a really nice improvement over the previous version..
Good work Autodesk
You can paste without opening a new window. Have sig files so people can finally put in their current version,etc...It actually remembers you when you close a session and come back... And the search tool seems to work just fine...oh and you can hit enter without it doubling the space.
Sorry, NNTP was like heaven...... this is like..... well you know what.... I'm still getting an email when everyone replies, even though I've turned it off in every are of this site. This is what sucks...
