Viewport problems?

I have an issue with the PLE edition of Maya that is making me a little hesitant to purchase a student edition of 2008 because I'm worried I'll have a similar problem- and it is REALLY annoying. First of all it happens more often when I have a model shaded then when I don't, but it happens both ways. I'll be moving around the scene, rotating/zooming/panning etc... when suddenly the viewport will flash and no matter how I navigate I always get snapped back into an odd position. Its like I'm fighting against some unseen force, if I try to zoom in or out everything goes immediately back to its position, the same if I attempt to rotate or move. I tried this in one of the view options that has multiple viewports and this SIGNIFICANTLY increased the amount of time I could use Maya before running into this issue, but it always happens eventually. The last time I used Maya and ran into this bug, I simply zoomed out and out and out, then changed to the 4-View- then the main viewport actually changed and my model was zoomed out quite a bit. Made me wonder if there was an issue with the main viewport in Maya not refreshing properly? If anybody has any ideas or suggestions (possibly a setting somewhere I've overlooked) that could remedy this it would be greatly appreciated!

(Putting up my system info in case something jumps out at somebody about it being a hardware issue)
Windows XPx64
Intel E6600 2.4ghz
4gb pc6400 RAM
EVGA 8800gts 640mb (have tried latest drivers from EVGA as well as Nvidia, and prior releases for both)
and a few hundred GB of extra HD space

(I also tried switching out my keyboard and mouse in case something was "sticking" even though everything popped back up after being depressed and this didn't help) I'm crossing my fingers and hoping this sounds familiar or like a simple thing to fix!

I have this same problem with my 8800GT in WinXP64. As suggested in another thread, this could be due to hardware overlay panes not being enabled. If you can find a way to force that feature, I would think it would fix the problem.

I have the same problem with my Nvidia GeForce 7950GX2. Still haven't found any fixes.
