I downloaded and installed inventor 2016 pro 30 day trial.

I later signed up for and was activated for a student license.

Now how to I activate my 30 trial version so that it is good for 3 years?

In order to activate your student license on the trial version, please see Converting a Trial to a Paid License and follow the instructions. (This also applies to student license.)

But I do not see the Buy Now option when I start up Inventor.  Only "Continue Trial" and "see available purchase options here"

You need to click on Enter Serial Number and use the serial number which was provided to you by the Education Community upon downloading the program.

I downloaded and installed the program as a 30 day trial.
I was not provided any info from any Education Community.

I later applied for the student license as a faculty member of our school
system because my wife is on the faculty there.
I received an email saying that I had been activated, but nothing that had
a serial number.

@Anonymous In that case you need to create an Education Community account and start the download process from there in order to receive a serial number. There's no need to fully download the program, simply go as far as obtaining the serial number and use it to activate the product.
