Revit - Slow Sync Process

Hello All!

 

I was hoping to get some feedback on an issue our end-users are experiencing. As they are currently utilizing Revit 2015 and will eventually move on to the latest versions of Revit, AutoCAD, etc., they are having slow sync issues with their Central Models located on our local File Server. They would work off their local model and sync to the Central Model on the shared drives(Located on the File Server) every 30 minutes, which is recommended. This sync process to the Central Model usually takes between 3-5 minutes, of course depending on the changes and file size. In this case, one example would be a 500MB Revit model. When they sync to the local model, it takes less than 30-45 seconds. I am hoping to upgrade their File Server to improve this sync process as well as ugprading their pipeline from a 1G to 10G NICs. I do not think it is so much their workstations as they are powerhouse  computers.

 

End-User Computer Specs:

 

HP Z620 with 32/40GB Xeon E5-1650 v2 @3.50ghz

1Gig NIC

500GB SSD Samsung 840PRO

 

Server 2008 R2 Standard

HP ProLiant DL380 G3

2x CPU Xeon X5355 2.66ghz

4GB of RAM

 

Any suggestions or ideas? Is the server the bottleneck? Server upgrade suggestions?

When you are experiencing difficulty with the network server verify the connectivity to the server from the computer(s) as described below:

Using Internet Explorer to check if the ports used for licensing are open

 

Microsoft Internet Explorer. Type the following into the browser: 

http://your-server-name:2080

http://your-server-name:27000

 

The URL should  display something similar to the following:

Wê-60Wê-60Wê-60Wê-60Wê-60Wê-60

 

If you have a firewall between the license server(s) and the client computers, you need to open some TCP/IP ports on the server for license-related communication.

Open port 2080 for adskflex, and open ports 27000 through 27009 for lmgrd.

The issue is not a licensing or recognition between the NLM on the server. The issue is relative to the sync process that occurs between the end-users workstations and the Central Model they are working on(CAD/Revit files) file server. It is taking a long time to sync to the Central Models. This could be a Server issue and the data throughput being the bottleneck or the pipeline for the LAN connection 1Gg vs. 10Gig, which I am looking to upgrade. Thank you though for your input!

Hi @Anonymous,

 

I don't recommend syncing the central model every 30 minutes... Save locally throughout the day and sync when there's big changes that others need to see right away. That being said, each user should sync about 3 maybe 4 times a day... The rest of the day should be local saves.

 

Other than that it's hard to tell what actually causing performance issues without seeing the Revit model. That being said, make sure your models are clean of unused content (use the Purge Unused tool from the Manage Tab on the ribbon). You should also, make sure users are creating views sparingly, and not creating and keeping temporary views because they are the main reason why Revit models grow out of control in size.
