Network shared color preferences in Maya 2016

Hello,

I am wondering about the proper way to set up a shared color preferences xml file for a network setup of Maya at a studio with 20+ users working from the same file.

Due to the majority of our work being rendered in Viewport 2.0, we actually don't want to have the color management setting enabled. From searching online, it seems there is no way around this besides setting up a color management policy file that the users will all reference.

I am currently setting the environment variable MAYA_COLOR_MANAGEMENT_POLICY_FILE=X:\cfg\maya\2016\color_mgt\color_mgt_off.xml where X:\ is a shared network drive.

In this file, I have the line <Parameter name="userTransformPath" value="X:/cfg/maya/2016/color_mgt/synColor" />  When Maya launches, it creates a X:\cfg\maya\2016\color_mgt\synColor\shared_catalog.cat file and a X:\cfg\maya\2016\color_mgt\synColor\shared_catalog.cat.lock file.  We are experiencing problems with this as multiple users access the file.  It appears that in some cases the files can have file handles left open and prevent others from accessing the files.

Is there a better way to do this?  We had tried putting a local %APPDATA% path for the userTransformPath value, but Maya doesn't seem to recognize the system environment variables.  If there is a path in there that it can't find, any time the Maya Settings window is opened and closes, a prompt will come up complaining that the color management policy file is not correct and needs to be saved or exported.  This is very annoying for users as they are prompted for changing settings unrelated to color management, or even just viewing the preferences.
