Autodesk Building Design Suite Premium 2016 and 2017 in Windows 10.

There is a problem with importing/migrating user settings from previous versions.

When I install the software, initially everything works fine.  I then as a normal user try to migrate my settings from 2016 or 2015 and the programs stop working (ACAD 2016, 2017, ACAD Architecture 2016, 2017, ACAD MEP 2016, 2017).  By stop working I mean that the software will not boot.  It loads as normal all the way to where you think it should be opening your default template and then the software crashes.  If you reset the software to default configuration it immediately starts working again.  I have also tried to merge/import settings from one CUI file into the new software and that also causes the software to stop working.

At this time it appears thay you have to set up any custom CUI or other settings manually, including Custom Menu's, Workspaces, ToolBars, plotter styles or file templates rather than migrating or importing them from previous versions of the software.

Hi pclarke,

When migrating custom settings from 2016 to 2017 in AutoCAD, product crashes with a message "Autodesk component has stopped working". This is a known issue and development team is currently working to address this issue.

First, The migration utility must be run as Administrator in order to successfully migrate all settings.

  • Expand START > All Programs > Autodesk > AutoCAD Architecture / MEP > Migrate Custom Settings.
  • Right-click Migrate From a Previous Release and choose Run as Adminstrator.

Please refer to following workaround:

  1. Export your settings in AutoCAD 2016
  2. Use 7 zip to unzip the folders.
  3. Search for the ACAD.CUI path and copy the path.
  4. Launch AutoCAD 2017
  5. Type –CUI in the command line
  6. Go to transfer tab. Load the copied path on the right side CUI folder path and select ACAD.CUI
  7. Now expand the CUI copied from 2016 and then drag and drop the customizations to the main CUI on the left side which is for 2017.
  8. Then save and it will load all your customizations.

For the Custom Plotter styles, you can try the below suggestion :

  1. Launch AutoCAD 2016
  2. Type PLOTTERMANAGER in the command line
  3. Now copy the Plotstyles folder
  4. Launch AutoCAD 2017
  5. Type PLOTTERMANAGER in the command line
  6. Now replace the plotstyles folder you copied from 2016 to 2017.
  7. You can see all the plot styles loaded in your 2017.

  Hope it helps.

I attemped to 'tranfer' or drag the custom pieces from the 2016 CUI file into the 2017 main CUI file and had the same problem.  It would cause the software to not work.  Additionally I never received a message of 'autodesk component has stopped working' it just crashes on boot.

I have already recreated all my files from scratch and am up and running.  I am posting this because I could not find any notification or info that this was an issue for users and wanted everyone to be aware of the problem before they wasted lots of time trying to fix their issue or cursing at the software.

Hi pclarke,

Thank you for your patience on this incident, we understand your situation and the frustration you encountered. Product crash was also reported in the description of this known issue, and it was ready approved to fix about custom settings migration to AutoCAD 2017. I do realize this is not the solution at the moment and really appreciate your efforts to recreate all files to make it works.

We would also like to thank you for bringing this to our attention and apologize for the inconvenience this is causing to you and other users.

User feedbacks are very important for us as these are helping Autodesk to constantly improve our products. That is why I would also encourage you to use our product feedback site as well and logg wishes or any other kind of product feedbacks and assign it directly to our product design and development team:
