Problem loading acadres.dll resource file

AutoCAD 2018 and Windows 10 64-bit.

When AutoCAD is launched, a message box pops up with the unhelpful error message "Problem loading acadres.dll resource file".

The reason there is a problem is because the file does not exist in any of the program folders. The file does exist in the setup folder (offline installer) but it's clearly not being copied across to the program folder during installation.

I have uninstalled/reinstalled AutoCAD several times, including all 8 of the Microsoft C++ redistributables, antivirus disabled, cleaned the registry and removed all traces of Autodesk from the system. I have also run the Microsoft FixIt tool. Yet this one file simply refuses to be installed. There are no error messages during installation.

I have also tried manually copying the file across. I assumed the correct location was C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2018\en-us however that's clearly not the case. So, to which folder does this file actually belong and why isn't it being installed?

I have Googled for this error and it is apparently a problem that has existed as far back as AutoCAD 2005!

Hi,

looks like >>>that article<<< describes most of the options to get your AutoCAD installed.

>> including all 8 of the Microsoft C++ redistributables

Including the x86 and x64 there should be 12 packages necessary to install.

Framework was not mentioned in your post, re-download the installation files using "Browser Download" is also an additional option.

Which operating system do you have?

Thanks for responding.

Been there, done that. Does not address the problem.

Only 8 are installed by AutoCAD: Microsoft Visual C++ 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2015 (both the 32/64 bit versions).

.NET Framework was not mentioned because this only applies to Windows 7 but removing .NET makes no difference anyway.

Already tried browser download before using the standalone (offline) installer. Makes no difference which I use.

>> Which operating system do you have?

Windows 10 64-bit (as specified at the top of my post).

Additional Information:

After uninstalling AutoCAD and the 8 MS VC++ redistributables (and .NET), I delete the following folders:

C:\Program Files\Autodesk

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Autodesk

C:\ProgramData\Autodesk

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Autodesk

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk

I then clean the registry with CCleaner to remove all traces of Autodesk.

I then clear the local and system TEMP folders:

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Temp

C:\Windows\Temp

After rebooting, I disable McAfee Real-time Scanning and then run AutoCAD Setup. After another reboot, launching AutoCAD gives the same error.

I have now ascertained acadres.dll really does belong in the C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2018\en-US folder. Manually copying the file from the setup folder does not address the problem.

Given I've traced this error as far back as AutoCAD 2005, why hasn't it been addressed properly?

Hello @Anonymous,

Take a look at the following issues with Performance issues caused by McAfee anti-virus software, you may want to uninstall McAfee, then install your Autodesk product.

You can consider running through the steps below & installing a different version to see if it helps:

  1. Conduct a Clean Uninstall of the previous installation attempts & use the MSfixitTool to complete it
  2. Reboot the computer & log in as Administrator
  3. Clean out the TEMP folder. To open the TEMP folder, type %TEMP% in the address bar of Windows Start Menu and hit Enter (Windows)
  4. Temporarily disable security settings like Antivirus, Firewall & UAC on your Windows operating system
  5. Use the Browser Download Method in your Autodesk Account or via the AVA | Autodesk Virtual Agent (download all the parts)

Hey Peter,

did you eventually manage to overcome the problem?

I'm experiencing the same problem while installing autocad 2018...

Just like you I already tried everything, but still the same problem.

Thanks in advance!
