Maya 2017 fails to launch / Maya 2016 presents error.

Hello! I am a Communication Design MA student in Glasgow, UK. I've been using Maya 2014 for the last couple years and recently decided to update to 2017, using my Autodesk student account. I was able to acquire a product key and serial number just fine, and have it accepted in the install wizard, but after the installation is completed, Maya simply does not launch; it appears to try launching and crashes immediately (I'm on a macbook pro mid-2012, the application bounces up and down for a short bit before dissapearing from the dock with no response whatsoever).

I tried to install Maya 2016 instead, and obtained a license for that as well. Again, everything is fine all the way through the installation, but when launching the application, I receive the following error message:

License was not obtained

Tried Maya 2016 (657H1 2016.0.0.F), error 20

License method:

environment variable MAYA_LICENSE_METHOD='standalone'

Product choice:

environment variable MAYA_LICENSE='unlimited'

License file override:

environment variable MAYA_ALT_EN is not set

I have dug as deep as I could into this issue, trying out various suggestions from forums, threads and discussions that I found regarding the same error, and usually involved deleting files or folders that were tied to previous versions or licensing information; but with no success whatsoever. Maya2017 still refuses to even launch and Maya2016 continues to deliver the same error despite deleting and reinstalling it multiple times, as well as deleting and replacing numerous files and folders.

The application is crucial to my work, and I've hit a bit of a dead end right now. Unfortunately, my computer knowledge isn't the greatest, so I have a hard time figuring out what could be the issue here. I'd appreciate any help or suggestions regarding any of the cases, either with Maya2017 or Maya2016.

Thank you very much,

Hello soti-a and welcome to the Autodesk community!

It looks like you need to get a License File. Community members with similar questions found the following article(s) useful:

Hello again, thank you very much, I found that solution in a previous forum but I didn't execute it properly as it seems.
After numerous tries of un-installations and re-installations and activations, it didn't work for Maya 2016 but IT DID for Maya 2017! It works, so all good! 🙂

Hello, sorry for the late reply, have you tried the solution posted by Darin. Green just above? If you had Maya 2014 before, you have to get rid of all the files that have to do with it, and some are REALLY hidden, so the solution proposed really helped me (and I don't mean to delete any of your projects by the way). Just uninstall the folder with the application and then do the other steps mentioned. It still didn't work for a couple of times, I had to uninstall and reinstall both versions of the program but eventually, the 2017 version worked. Every time you reinstall you have to make sure that there is nothing Maya related on your applications.

Hello ,

I was wondering if the solution applies to windows ?, If so How do window users experiencing the same issue go about it ?

Is there anyone else in your company using the same Autodesk applications as you are? If so, ask them to provide you with a copy of their ProductInformation.pit file located in C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\AdLM\ directory. Once you have it, paste it to the same location on your machine by overwriting the corrupted one.

If that doesn't work, you'll need to perform a clean uninstall of all Autodesk applications and reinstall the software. Use the Clean Uninstall link in my signature under Resources as a guide for cleanly removing the applications and their reference files:

Hello Darin,

Thank you so much for the speedy reply, my Auto desk Maya is a student version so I cant request pit.file, having said that I will try to implement the clean uninstall however it would be my 7th or 8th time uninstalling and reinstalling. Thank you in advance.

Kind regards
