Requesting a Network License File
After planning your network and installing the Network License Manager (NLM), you need to obtain a network license file from Autodesk. This license file contains important licensing and server information and is used to configure your server so that you can run the NLM.
Requesting and validating your network license file consists of four tasks:
Collecting License Server Information
When you complete a request for a license file, you need to provide information about your Network License server(s). Here's the information required for each server model type:
Single Server Model:
- Host name and physical address of the server
Redundant Server Model:
- Host name and physical address for all three servers
Distributed Server Model:
- Number of servers in the distributed server model
- Host name and physical address for each server
- Number of seats on each server

Requesting License Files
You'll need to sign in to the Autodesk product registration website to request a license file using your server information and the serial number for the network version of the Autodesk software you want to the NLM to manage.
To request a license file from the Autodesk Registration website:
- Visit register.autodesk.com and sign in using your Autodesk Account information. If you don't have an Autodesk Account, follow the onscreen prompts to create one.
Note: The Product Registration & Activation website requires you to use your Autodesk ID to sign in. If you don't know your Autodesk ID, you can sign in at accounts.autodesk.com using your email address and password to view your ID, which is listed under Profile/Security Settings.
- Select the correct Operating System, enter the serial number for the software you wish to activate over a network, and click the Next button.
Note: You must enter the serial number for a network version of your Autodesk product. If you enter the serial number for a stand-alone version you will not see the steps that follow.
- Select the account where your software is registered and click the Next button.
- Select your Network server type and provide the appropriate server information, which you collected in the above task, Collecting License Server Information. Click Next when you are ready to proceed.
- Your license files are issued. Click Save License File under each license and the file will be downloaded to your browser download folder. If need to request license files for other products, click Register and activate more products. Once you have been issued all your licenses, you can then move the license files to the appropriate license servers according to the instructions below.
Copying License Files to a Server
After you receive your license file, you must save it on your license server. We recommend you save your license file to the location where you installed your Network License Manager or to a separate folder where you keep your licenses. Here are example locations for different operating systems:
Windows:
- C:\Program Files\Autodesk Network License Manager\Licenses
Mac:
- /Users/<user id>/adsknlm
Linux:
- /home/<user id>/adsknlm
Note: The license file you downloaded will have a default name such as, DSADV2016enlicense_NOSTROMO.lic. You can rename the license file to anything you prefer but it must have a “.lic” extension.
Confirming License File Accuracy
After saving your license file, it is important to confirm that it contains the correct information. Your license file will only work on the machine that has the same physical address as shown in the license. If the host name does not match the host name of the server, you can modify the host name in your license file. If the physical address does not match the physical address of the server you must request a new license with the correct physical address.
To confirm the accuracy of your license file:
- Open the license file using a text editor (such as Notepad or TextEdit).
Note: Do not use Microsoft Word or any other word processing program that might modify the formatting of the license file.
- Verify that the host name and physical address matches that of the server where the license is used. If it does not match, you will need to request a new license file with the correct information. The first line(s) of the license file, beginning with SERVER will list your host name and physical address as shown in the following examples:
Single/Distributed license
SERVER NOSTROMO 001F5B398D08
Redundant server license
SERVER NOSTROMO 001F5B398C08
SERVER SULACO 005056b5600a
SERVER AURIGA 00FFC0D3BD0E
After you verify that your license file is correct, you can close it and configure your network license server.
