Installing an older version of AutoCAD - need activation code????

I have used AutoCAD 2004 since I purchased it in 2004.  I have gone through several computers over the years but have never had an issue reinstalling with my serial number and CD key.  My old Dell recently died and I purchased a new one; I have tried to register my version of AutoCAD like I have in the past after installing, but it is not accepting my information - it is now requesting an activation code.  I contacted the "help desk" regarding this and they say my version is invalid because it was upgraded to AutoCAD 2006 in 2005 and never registered, so now is expired.  (a) I never upgraded to 2006, I still have the original 2004 on my computer and on my CD, and (b) if this is the case, how in the world have I been able to install this product at least 4 times over the past 14 years???  I am a residential interior designer and cannot afford a new version of AutoCAD, nor do I need one for my application; is there any way to get my 2004 version working again?  Please do not tell me to contact the "help desk," they are adamant my version is 2006!

Buyer beware.  Even with an original & legal Activation Code, Autodesk will disable the old program by requiring a new code that doesn't exist.  They sabotage your legitimate purchase to require new payment.  Unethical & shady business practice to say the least.

I just switched to Carlson. The platform is very similar to Land Desktop and extremely affordable.  I just purchased the 4 pack end of the year sale option.  This included Carlson Survey (basically Autocad Land Desktop), GIS, Hydrology and Point Cloud programs and the cost was $3150 for all four programs! I own them outright (no monthly licensing fees) and I can install my programs on 2 computers. I can also update my programs to the most current version for 1/10th of the sale price per year from when I bought the program to the year I'm updating.  What I like most about this software package is the seamless transition between the different programs as they all load together when you start a drawing and you just switch back and forth between your gis and cad, etc and it all ends up fusing together into one drawing.  I'm very impressed with this not only for the price but it's ease of use.   Autocad forgot the little guy.  Carlson didn't...

Yes, I'm using Carlson standalone with intellicad.  Carlson allows for a 30 day free demo/trial period if you want to give it a try.
