Cannot create deployment Revit 2021

Hi guys,

I am trying to create a deployment for Revit to be installed through SCCM. I just downloaded Revit 2021 and it came with 6 different files, I ran the executable to combine those into an installation file with setup.exe. I then run the Setup.exe to try to create deployment as I have done with AutoCAD, Inventor and Architecture. But, after running Setup.exe, it does not give me the option to create deployment, all I could do is a normal install as if I was going to install into that one particular machine. Have you guys seen run into anything like this with Revit 2021? or know a way to create deployment for Revit 2021?

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Nhan

That is exactly what I needed and that worked, my deployment installed everything I needed minus Desktop App and Worksharing monitor.

Thanks for your help.

How do we add additional content libraries like the ones found here? https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit-products/downloads/caas/downloads/content/autodesk-revi...

Hello,
The content provided on Autodesk Knowledge Network are in the form of self-extracting zip files and can not directly be added to a Revit 2021 deployment. Standard tools such as SCCM or Microsoft Configuration Manager can be utilized to push content along with the product deployment. For scenarios where content is on a shared location, the self-extracting zip files can be extracted to the common location directly and then using a custom Revit.ini file added to the deployment image you can map Revit to the shared location.

Thanks Gerry, you don't happen to know any install switches for the EXE's downloaded from the content page? We are using PDQ to deploye software.

I believe we used winrar based packaging, so these should help:

  -d<path> set the destination path
  -s silent mode, hide all

Hello

I created a Revit Image via the accounts page, no real problems encountered

The path to the install image was set as F:\ because the image would be stored on a USB3 portable harddrive (as we usually do and had no problems with in the past.

However, when testing/installing the image we got the error message "Installation Incomplete ..."

Please see the included screendump

As stated in the error message Revit seems to work but there is no reference as to which components re missing in the installation

I also included a zip file with the logfiles from %temp%

can someone from Autodesk investigate pls.

Regards

Patrick

I'm not from Autodesk, but took a short look to your log files and found that the

F:\2021\REVIT\image\{A6A219ED-9242-337B-B6B4-CB926DCF7442}\Content\ADSKMaterials\ILM\MediumImageLibrary2021.msi

was not installed because the file:

MSI (s) (54:2C) [10:59:13:662]: Product: Autodesk Material Library Medium Resolution Image Library 2021 -- Error 1335. The cabinet file 'Common~1.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package.

is corrupted.

I recommend to test the cabinet file ("Common~1.cab") with 7zip/WinRar or something else. If it is corrupt just replace with the original file from your installation sources. But check this file also.

regards

Markus

If the CAB file is okay may be something is blocking/locking the access to the file during the install (virus scanner ?).

Do you have this problem on all test machines ?

The new deployment feature looked great, but its usability is far from it. Where is the supporting documentation? UNC paths don't look to be supported anymore. I'm being prompted to pick a new folder direction as long as that is my C drive.

No features to add additional content. Picking a custom ini file only asks for its name, what about the location to pick up the settings?

Yes, I've read the earlier replies. Ask AVA, etc. Report your feedback. What would have been nice, is to have both options. I've sat waiting over an hour for the original deployment that isn't a deployment. Configured this online, to find it doesn't work and most of the original functions are missing.

We install your products from 2017 to 2021 as historic projects are still in 2017. Navis manage, CADMep, ESTMEP, Autocad, RECAP, Freedom, etc. Why is Revit 2021 so different to all of the other installs that have been configured to run through SCCM and now we need to spend more time reconfiguring and asking Virtual Agents to fix what wasn't broken in the first place?

Craig,

Starting with Revit 2021, and a few other Autodesk 2021 products, we are introducing a new installation framework and a new deployment configuration tool via Autodesk Account.  Revit is not alone and more Autodesk products will migrate to the new environment in the future.  As you have noted, we have intentionally simplified the deployment configuration experience to the some of the most commonly used options from the classic deployment creation experience.

After configuring a Revit deployment via Autodesk Account, a small Deployment application will be installed to start the deployment image download.  This is where I assume that your UNC path is not accepted, we have seen this limitation for some users.  At this time, you should be able download to a local or mapped drive location.

For the custom Revit.ini, you are correct we are only asking to the file name.  The file name is used to let the Revit installation know to consume that specific file for the Revit.ini.  As noted in the Deployment interface, once the Deployment image is downloaded to your local environment the custom revit.ini file should be copied into the "image" folder of the deployment.

I would like to hear more about your statement "Configured this online, to find it doesn't work and most of the original functions are missing."  What did you find that did not work?  What functions, do you believe are missing?

Thank you for your feedback and I look forward to hearing more.

Gerry

Can I ask why the install method is being changed?  So far it seems to be a step in the wrong direction.  What is the benefit to the new method?  It seems to be more frustrating and requires work arounds.  When paying this kind of money for a product I would expect better.

Gerry;

I was going to ask about adding 3rd party add-ins to the "improved " deployment, but from the comments that is not going to happen.  Is that Microsoft component you mentioned free?  My IT manager believes it to be part something which must be purchased.  He also believes it would be a bit of an undertaking to learn to use it correctly, especially since we would not use it very often.

Other than agreeing with the complaints about:

Not having the same capabilities to piggy-back 3rd party add-ins

   Total confusion with the documentation

there seems to be a problem with the Generative Design component crashing the deployment.  I spent the better part of a day making and remaking deployments, adding in one extension at a time.  When the only component left that I wanted to add was the Generative Design I created a deployment installing only that extension.  It crashed and could not download the deployment.

Yes, I put in a support request about all of this.  They suggested I also post a comment here.

One final issue: I had to manually close the CMD window which opens when you start running the deployment.

And one more question: When you add the name of the custom INI file do you need just the filename, which is what is asked for, or must the .INI be included? Maybe it will work either way.

Hi Gerry,

The online deployment package when downloaded wants to know the storage location to continue downloading the remaining deployment. I couldn't proceed any further than that, the UNC path normally used within deployments doesn't work and mapped drives are not available when selecting a different directory. Autodesk promotes the use of add-in's to support our workflows. It's convenient to bundle these together rather than building a deployment for each add-in. I think we use around 10 or more add-ins to support Revit. I'm all for change, this isn't like introducing the Ribbon in AutoCAD back in the day. If change assists in your daily tasks, great. I'm struggling to see how this improves the process.

Hello

I tried the same image on another system and apparently REvit installed without problems

However, starting up Revit gave me the error "The license manager is not functioning ..." (see attached screendump)

Now trying to uninstall only Revit itself via Programs and Features but it runs extremely slow: 45 minutes and on 25 % on a HP Z240 with SSD and 32 GB of memory ??

Regards

Patrick

Hello Again

some follow-up

The Revit uninstall is "hanging" now for three hours at 90 %, nothing happens, no error messages (see Revit_Uninstall screen dump)

I wanted to try the 3DSMAX image but that told me it could not download to F:\2021\3DSMAX which worked "perfectly" for Revit

Think I'm going home ...

Perhaps clarify that in the documentation being prepared.
