Autodesk Vault Basic 2018 move question

Anonymous
Not applicable

I have a current install of Autodesk Vault Basic 2018 on a laptop that is being used as a server. I am working on migrating it to an actual server. I want to get the install done on the server but will not be able to move the data for a couple of weeks. When installing the software it wants the serial number and key for the product. If i finish the install will it cause a problem with the current install? I cannot have any down time on the original installation until it is time to migrate the data.

Welcome to the Autodesk User's Community..

First Vault basic is free and doesn't require a serial # or product key.  So what serial # and product key request are you talking about.

Anyhow to answer your question, installing Vault basic on a new server is not going to impact your existing server/data on your laptop.   Many times companies have two separate Vault servers for production and testing and are not related at all or no impact to each other.

I was going thru the install and it is asking for the product key and serial number. I have them for our product but did not want to effect the live current install.

Hello @Anonymous,

Welcome, I see you are a new member.

We will first need some more information to best answer your questions.

Do you have a single-user or multi-user license?

Is this the Vault Basic that comes with your subscription of Product Design & Manufacturing Collection?

Please review the Plan Your Deployment of Vault. Your licensing, environment & usage requirements will affect how you set this up. With Vault there is a Vault Client & Vault Server. It seems you are moving the Vault Server over from your laptop to a server?

I will reach out to our Vault expert @jens.krause, for more input on this.

Hi @Anonymous.

You are asking if moving the Vault Server from one machine to another affects ability of the original machine (laptop) to use the license. As @natasha.l has already pointed out, this depends on the version and the licensing model that you use:

If you use Vault Basic that comes with the Product Design Suite or Inventor, no license is needed and moving the server does not require additional measures regarding the licensing.

If you use Vault Workgroup or Vault Professional with a network license (lmtools installed on one of your servers or the laptop) the transferring process will also be smooth: Just point the new server machine to the ip adress of the license server and it will automatically pull a license from there as soon as a client connects to it.

If you are using individual licenses, you may need to borrow or transfer the license from one machine to the other. I will add @marco.ruvutuso from the Installation and Licensing Support Team here because he will be able to give you more details.

Feel free to reach out to me again if you have questions regarding moving the actual Vault data (database and filestore) from one machine to another. (This is normally done by creating a full backup of the Vault on the laptop and restoring it on the new server)

Kind regards,
