Autocad Application has stopped Working

Hello everyone,

I also have a problem with "AutoCAD Application has stopped working" at startup of the program - maybe 2 or 3 seconds after the splash screen appears. I tried to run in compatibility mode (WinVista), as administrator, on a new guest account, on a new account with administrator priviliges, with internet connection on or off, re-installation of all C++ Redistributables and re-installation of AutoCAD itself and all of it's additions. The problem occurs on both AutoCAD 2016 and 2017, student licences. The program was working fine about 2 months ago (I can't tell exactly how much time has passed since then) when I was working on a project, then it was not used (since I didn't need to) and today while trying to run it again for another project the problem occured. The PC was normally used during all this time - Windows Updates were installed, nVidia Drivers, some games, some partition management and backup tools.

I have searched throught many search results found on multiple forums, also here, but nothing has worked so far. Can anyone please help me?

System specs:

Windows 7 x64 SP1

nVidia GTX 980Ti

Intel 4790k CPU

Asus Maximus VI Hero mobo

Let me know if You need any more information.

Hi @Anonymous

I see that you are visiting as a new member. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

I am sorry that you are having this issue.  When you start AutoCAD do you see any error messages?  When you reinstalled, a log file was created. Is this still on your system? Can you attach it?  Also, you might try downloading and running AIDA which will tell us what part of the installation failed.

When AutoCAD starts up does it hang at the license check portion? this might mean that it can no longer check its license file with Autodesk.  You might need to rebuild the license file.

Please select the Accept as Solution button if my post solves your issue or answers your question.

Dear John,

thank You very much or Your quick response.

When I start AutoCAD only the splash screen shows up - earlier with "Initializing" message, now, after my attempt to rebuild the license file (by deleting it), with "Preparing for first run" (the actual message may be different in English since my AutoCAD is in another language, but I hope You know what I meant). The only error message is "AutoCAD Application has stopped working" showed by the system.

I attached a log file created by AIDA - unfortunately, this tool was not able to find any issues with the installation. Maybe You can find there something that could cause the problem?

I also tried to install it on my main system partition, but that didn't help either... Interesting thing is that even when I uninstall AutoCAD 2017 and try to install the 2016 version the installation program does not let me do this, because it still can "see" the newer version and aborts the installation.

Please let me know if You have any ideas or suggestions.

Thank You in advance and have a nice day

Hi @Anonymous,  I am going to move this thread to Installation and Licensing as I think you will get more responses.

In order to install AutoCAD 2016 you will need to do a clean uninstall of the 2017 product.

Let's see if you can get 2016 to run properly and then proceed with 2017 if that works ok for you.

Please also verify that you have the current graphics card driver installed.  You can also try starting AutoCAD with hardware acceleration disabled by following the steps in this article.

Dear @john.vellek,

I did the clean uninstall - unfortunately the AutoCAD 2016 installer still shows a message, that there is already a newer version of AutoCAD installed. The graphic's driver was updated in the first place, on 18.01.2017. Since I did the clean uninstall and can't install the 2016 version, I can't run it with disabled hardware acceleration (there's nothing to run at the moment). I have left the installation "paused" on the newer version error and I will wait if You have further ideas.

@Mark.Lancaster: thank You for Your suggestion, but following the listed steps was one of the first things I found on the Internet and I have already tried it - unfortunately that didn't help.
