3Ds Max files icon problem

Hi, there ..

I used to work on 3Ds max design 2014 for a quite while ..

then I decided to upgrade to 2015 ..

I installed 2015, and I made sure that evertything is okay .. then I uninstalled the 2014 version to spare space on my hdd

after uninstalling the 2014 version, all 3ds max files on my machine don't show the 3ds max icon for no reason !!!! ( check the attatchment )

i tried to figure that out, with no luck !!!

I tried to uninstall the 2015 version and reinstall it. and it didn't work !!

I know that it's not a major problem .. but it's really annoying !!!!

( I use windows 8.1 btw )

What worked for me, was to reset the all application and icon file paths in Windows.

Simply go to:

start > settings > Apps > Default apps > Scroll down to "Reset to the Microsoft recommended defaults" and click "Reset".

Worked for 3ds max 2018, after upgrading from 2016.

For those who cant find 3ds max in <<Choose  default Program>> list

You must check if the 3ds Max path is right in Registry Editor. This method worked for me !!!

In my case there was linked 2014 version but my current version is 2018.

You need to do this steps

Copy your new 3ds max exe link

2.jpg2.jpg

Then past it into 3ds max registry file

regedit  >   HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT   >  max_auto_file > shell > open > command > in right window you will see file with 3ds max link  > chose that file , it will have name (Default) Right click on that and chose Modify > Past link there in Value Data.    After  this steps cloth registry . Select damaged 3ds file > right click  > open with > and choose 3ds max(it will be appeared there !!! )

The solution in this thread did not work for me, (win 10 Max 2019) but this tiny app fix it without restart in a heartbeat

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/file_types_manager.html

Run it is a tiny exe file
edit menu Find
type max
scroll to the .max entry
right click on it and click on Edit File Type or press F2
Click on the (...) at the Default icon entry look for the icon in the dialog box (there is only one)
click OK and OK in the Edit File Type box
It should refresh and get fixed right there.

Hope it helps

Nothing in this thread worked for me, but the video below solved it for me. I had to create the max_auto_file, shell and DefaultIcon keys by myself because they weren't there initially:

Honestly.. now.. after every annual update of 3dsMax, I'm stuck finding a new solution. I'm thoroughly confused that Autodesk doesn't seem to understand how to create programs that can install correctly. Every.. single.. time.. my icons are get screwed up. No other program on my machine in the last 5 years does this. ONLY 3dsmax. ????

Hi i had this problem too, or so, it seems that only .3ds files are having this mismatch with the icon.

I opend the "Regedit" but simply the key "max_auto_files" doesn't exist on my registry.
I created the key myself, first the "Shell" key (Shell/open/command ) like the post of @Anonymous  shows and then I created the "DefaultIcon" Key (max_auto_file/ DefaultIcon)like in the post of @ggarza  but nothing has changed.

Any Idea?

start > settings > Apps > Default apps > Scroll down to "Reset to the Microsoft recommended defaults" and click "Reset".

if you do the reset, it will affect the other rest of your program linking it back to windows preferred programs.

not a good idea

Unfortunately, I had that post years and years ago. It was a solution that worked for me well at the time. But, honestly, every time I update my Autodesk Suite, there are a lot of the same Icon, Execution, File Extension/Program issues. I always am able to come up with a workable solution for myself. I can't say HOW to fix this, but it seems for some reason your unique files (your working saved files) have not only taken the proper Icon, but are launching as the standard 3dsm executable. I'm not sure the exact way to fix this. My original fix is simply borrowing the "exe ICON" graphic, and applying/associating it with the missing "file ICON".
A new solution to this ongoing 3dsm icon problem is certainly different by now.. especially if you have Windows 10, and the latest 3dsm. Sorry I can't help more than that.
