When approaching a large intersection, it is common for median to transition into turn lanes and you cannot do that in road design if the turn lane would develop across the centerline.
For example a 16ft median might have a 12 ft left turn lane develop in it leading up to an intersection. In this case, 4 ft of the left turn lane ends up across the centerline when the turn lane has fully developed and there is a remainder of 4 ft of median.
If the 16ft median is centered, it would have to be modeled as two 8ft median components straddling the centerline. You cannot make a widening that is split across the centerline. If you get cute with it and make an 6ft lane on one side and a 4ft lane on the other side then your intersection will be completely messed up because technically that 4ft piece of lane drives in the other direction.
I am aware of the workaround proposed by Jeff Bartels in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DeHXN-Pxo0 but I dont have time to make those weird split and offset centerline alignments, especially if the road is already designed by others and correct and all I get are xml exports.
We need to be able to cross the centerline with components or at the very least, designate a direction for components instead of them automatically getting a direction based on what side of the centerline they are on.
