Rail Bridge Design

Rail Bridge Design

Can we have the ability to create and modify rail bridges the same way as we can for road bridge please?

I think this will be a very interesting idea. Especially for the fact that it is not unusual to see railways (monorail, metrorail, etc) be suspended over the roadway.

To define pillars, bridges, etc.

Hope this will be taken in consideration!

As a workaround, one can create a component based road and add decoration to visualize the rail details.  With this approach, bridges can then be modeled as shown in the example created below.  It should be pointed out though that the geometry of the component road as well as the behavior at intersections will be based on design roads.

That all well and good for new rail lines, for which in the UK are very rare.

We want to be able to use the existing rail lines and add fully editable bridges.

We very often add new roads that need new rail bridges, and currently IW360 is very poor at this!

Very good points.  For the sale of clarity, how are you modeling the existing rail lines?  Does the modeling of such rail projects also involve multiple alignments, switch yards etc?

Also, regarding your last sentence, are you modeling new bridges on new roads that are crossing over existing rail lines or are you referring to the need to model new rail bridges along existing rail lines that are somehow crossing over the new roads?

We try not to model existing rail lines, we are simply using the rails that come in with model builder. If we do have to model an,y we just use the simple draw rail command.

Sorry, I got my terms the wrong way round! We need new bridges along existing rail lines that cross new roads. Currently this is very difficult to achieve.

Thanks for the clarifications.  The existing rail lines that come with Model Builder, as well as those created using the draw rail command are not at a level of detailed design (in terms of alignment geometry, cants etc).  On your rail projects, would you later be recreating these in say Civil3D during detailed design?

For the earlier design stages, what if we provided a way to convert the rail line into an equivalent component road such that you can leverage the bridge modeling capabilities as shown in my earlier response?

If we could convert to a design road / component road and keep the rail style and be able to model bridges as per design roads that would be perfect.

That would be a nice implementation indeed!

@ara.ashikian do you think that a deeper development of this will be taken into consideration? I am following some projects in which the rail are completely on a bridge, I will for sure follow your example!

Hi Nicola

Can you elaborate on what you would like to see in this "deeper development"?

Thanks

Absolutely @ara.ashikian!! Thank you for your feedback.

When I ask for deeper development, basically I was thinking to the possibility to achieve the same thing we can do with the road design, obviously translated into railway possibilities.

To be more clear, I was thinking in particular about bridges. The same issue that you explained in the previous topic.

I am working around Project Kameleon. And maybe the possibility to interact with revit as well.

Thank you very very much.

I know that a lot of effort is put into this.

Best regards

Nicola
