Keyboard Commands for Roadway Creation

Keyboard Commands for Roadway Creation

When creating a complex roadway, it would be useful to have a method by which the user might changes to roadway attributes during the creation process. For instance, if you are creating a flyover ramp, you would often start with a one way component road. Once you complete drawing the roadway, wherever there is a crossover of roadways, IW will automatically create an intersection.

I propose a keyboard command, which allows the user to specify a range of options while creating the roadway. Using the flyover ramp as an example, the user would start the component road with the first point. As they move their cursor to the second point, the user would hold down the ALT key and click a point, at which time a popup menu would appear with a range of options. The user would select "Start Bridge", then a submenu to select a component road style, then continue the creation of the bridge structure. Once the user reaches the end of the bridge, again, they would hold down ALT and click a point, at which time another popup menu would appear. The user would select "End Bridge" with a submenu to select a component road style and continue drawing the roadway to the end point.

During the creation process, the user could use the ALT contextual menu to specify elevation at each point along the roadway curve. Additional options would be curve type, split style, insert pier, add decoration, add lane, etc. Ultimately, this saves the user a significant amount of time in the creation of a road. If the user were to create a flyover using the existing method, they would draw the roadway spline, then go back to address each attribute one at a time. This Keyboard Command method would complete 80 to 100 percent of the roadway attributes with the initial creation.

This methodology could easily be applied to other asset creation functions; coverages, railways, building's, pipelines, etc.

This would be better to be called "Keyboard Commands for ASSET Creation".

I agree. I'm used to using the keyboard for C3D.

I think Infraworks could really take a nod from from PC based strategy games that have a large keyboard shortcut repository. As you create new styles and models, you would need to easily be able to assign those new styles to your key commands.

I agree with the assessment, "Keyboard Commands for ASSET Creation" is a better title.
