Civil BIM - Retaining Walls

Civil BIM - Retaining Walls

In this day and age of minimizing foot prints how can we yet to have an easy way to create a retaining wall? As I'm taking the train to San Diego there are ton of them left and right of the train.

This wall needs some heavy parametric design tools to go with it. It should let me set the minimum step length (even increment [such as 4' or 8' for plywood]), heights, variable footing for the given height, and easily let me try out different retaining wall types. There should be the ability to model all of the parts of the retaining wall through it's construciton life. Such as forms, backfill material. It should allow for the inclusion of a swale at the top of the wall. The wall should interact with objects around it such as pavement, sidewalk and slopes it is retaining. The design should be able to be sent to Civil 3D and shown in alignments and profile views. It should have a user interface to allow for modifying the steps and wall height and range of wall heights to be used in order to get an economical retaining wall design.

For Autodesk, I'd suggest reading the Caltrans Retaining Wall Design class for the steps currently being done in Civil 3D and then think about how the steps could be improved to provide a better user experience with a model based design.

I would love to see a wall components that we can use when working components parts. I would want two types of walls, one straight vertical wall such concrete and one segmental wall. In addtion, we would have the ability to set grading off the top of wall.

Just to clarify, we're discussing retaining walls. I might change the title of this idea to "retaining wall components," and see if that helps generate more kudos and attention.

And by "set grading off the top of wall," do you mean setting the slope? Or something else?

Did you see this idea, also about retaining walls?

If it's similar to yours, I'd recommend giving it a "kudos" if you haven't already...

Those are very good points.  We have the implementation of parametric retaining walls on our roadmap.  Thanks for the detailed feedback.

I worked things around on retaining walls by creating the wall using the feature lines on civil 3d and then use the Sweep tool to create a 3d solid. Then i imported it into infraworks as fbx but since the feature lines has the same location and the elevation of my surface it will fit right into the right place.
